Irene Manchester, 78, formerly of McGregor died Saturday, September 24, 2011 at Our Lady Of Peace Home in St. Paul following a long illness. She was born December 1, 1932 in McGregor to Grant and Mabel (Mandler) Manchester. She attended rural elementary schools in the McGregor area and high school in McGregor and Aitkin where she graduated in 1950. After graduation Irene was employed with a government sponsored radio program in Washington D.C. known as ???Voice of America???. When this program series ended she worked in the advertising industry in the Minneapolis area until her retirement. Irene never married. On her time off during her working years, she enjoyed traveling on organized tours of America, visiting museums, galleries, and historic sites. She was a devout Christian and lifelong member of the Lutheran Church. Irene was preceded in death by her parents and her brother Guy who died as a decorated war hero in Korea. She is survived by a 2 brothers: Gordon Manchester of McGregor and Jim Manchester of California. And many nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends. Graveside services will be 10:00AM, Wednesday, September 28, 2011 at Woodland Cemetery in McGregor. Reverend Erika Foss will officiate. Lempi S. Paajanen

Lempi Sylvia (Rautio) Paajanen, age 99 of Aitkin formerly of Palisade died Saturday, September 24, 2011 at the Aicota Health Care Center of Aitkin. Lempi was born December 18, 1911 at Painsdale, Michigan the daughter of Matti and Anna (Takala) Rautio. She moved with her family at an early age to Mahtowa, Mn. and attended the Barnum High School graduating in 1929. She then worked for a bank in Moose Lake for a time prior to her marriage. She married Wayne Paajanen on January 15, 1938 in Duluth, Minnesota. They lived in Tamarack, Kettle River, Mahtowa and settled in Palisade in 1952 where she raised her family. As her children grew older she worked as a part time book keeper for the Palisade oil coop. In later years she and her husband wintered in Donna, Texas. After her husband???s death in 1987 she continued living in Palisade and then moved to Aitkin and lived at the Aitkin Manor, the Riverwood long term care center and then to Aicota Health Care Center. She was a member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Palisade and was very active in the church???s ladies groups. She also enjoyed traveling. She had been to Finland, Mexico, Hawaii, Alaska, China and had also wintered in Florida for a few years with childhood friends. She also was very active volunteering with different organizations in Palisade and Aitkin. She loved her crossword puzzles, knitting and crocheting, and she especially enjoyed the spelling bees which were held at the Aicota Health Care Center. Lempi was a very loving mother, grandmother, and great grandmother. She is survived by her son and daughter in law: Wayne and JoAnne Alden of McGregor; daughter and son in law: Carol and Courtney Peterson of Virginia, Mn.; 3 grandchildren and spouses: Danae (Scott) Beaudette of Gilbert, MN.; Jody (Brad) Clawson of Pittsburgh, PA.; Janell (Scott) Sherr of Baltimore, Maryland; 6 great grandchildren: Nicholas and Anna Beaudette, Jack, Sam, and Kate Clawson; and Avery Sherr. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Wayne, and 11 brothers and sisters: Toivo, Uuno, Edward, John, Jalmar, Vienna, George, Art, Elsie, Katrina, and Hugo. Funeral services will be held Thursday, September 29, 2011 at 11 AM from Bethel Lutheran Church at Palisade with Rev. William Sass officiating. Burial will be in the Eagle Lake Cemetery south of Cromwell, MN. A Visitation will be held Wednesday, September 28 from 4 to 7 PM at the Sorensen-Root-Thompson Funeral Home and also 1 hour prior to the services at the church on Thursday. Ruth M. Klahr, 90 of Aitkin died Friday, September 23, 2011 at Riverwood Health Care Center in Aitkin. She was born July 3, 1921 in Minneapolis to Joseph and Bella (Girard) Bourassa. Ruth was married to Wayne Delbert Swart in 1945 in Algona, Iowa. Wayne died in 1964. Ruth married George Klahr December 28, 1973 in Minneapolis. She worked at Hennepin County Medical Center and then at Riverwood Health Care Center as a ward secretary. Ruth volunteered at Riverwood Health Care Center after her retirement. She was a member of the Order of the Eastern Star and First Lutheran Church in Aitkin. Ruth was a loving person to her friends and family. She was preceded in death by her parents, first husband Wayne Delbert Swart in 1964, second husband George Klahr on January 21, 1990, son Russell Swart, daughter Kathleen Haag, four brothers; William, John, George, and Robert ???Skippy??? Bourassa, two sisters; Marie Erickson and Pearl Benson. Ruth is survived by two granddaughters: Samantha Lubbesmeyer of Rosemount Raquel Haag of Apple Valley 6 Great-grandchildren: William Lubbesmeyer, Troy ???T.J.??? She was born October 15, 1915 in Minneapolis to Alfred and Hilma (Foker) Liebig. She graduated from Edison High School in Minneapolis and then from The University of Minnesota. Deloris was united in marriage to David R. Warner, Sr. on September 3, 1940 in Minneapolis. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church. She was an avid reader, who loved her family and being at the lake on Warner???s Point. She was preceded in death by her husband David in 1988, sister Dorothy Liebig, and her parents. She is survived by four children: David (Valerie) Warner, Jr. of McGregor Rebecca (Tom) Evans of Madison, WI. Margaret Agnes Weston, age 89 of Aitkin died Saturday, September 17, 2011 at the Aitkin Health Services in Aitkin. Margaret was born July 24, 1922 in Palisade the daughter of Arvid and Signe (Beck) Johnson. She grew up and attended schools in Palisade and Aitkin. She married Charles Weston Jr. on November 24, 1944 at Palisade. They lived and farmed in the palisade area until 1983. Margaret was a lifelong member of Bethel Lutheran Church in Palisade. She had served on the Palisade School Board and the West Libby Township Board. She is survived by her sons: Myrle (Rhonda) Weston of LaPorte, Indiana; Jerry Weston of Palisade, MN.; daughters: Charlene (Ronnie) Landrus of Wyoming, Mn.; Mary Ann (Peter) Ward of Ottawa, Illinois; 10 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren; Sister: Verna Kullhem of Aitkin and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her husband in 2005, her parents, 5 sisters and 1 brother. Marlys M. Meyer, age 74 of Aitkin died Friday, September 16, 2011 at the Foley Care Center in Foley, Minnesota. She was born May 29, 1937 at Henrietta, Minnesota the daughter of Robert and Elsie (Byrd) Conger. She attended school in Henrietta and then moved to Anoka where she graduated from High School in 1955. She then attended St. Olaf College for four years and received her degree in nursing. She worked as a nurse in various hospitals doing most of her work in the post natel area. She married David A. Meyer on June 20, 1959 in Anoka. The lived in the Twin Cities, where she raised her family and in later years she worked for Dayton???s in their Deli area. They moved to the Aitkin area in 1997 and have lived here since. She did volunteer work at the Riverwood Health Care Center, was a member of First Lutheran Church and did quilting with the church ladies. She is survived by her daughter and son in law: Erin Marie and Dan Eilers of Becker, Mn.; 2 grandchildren: Devin Krueger and Raven Krueger. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband David in 1999, son Michael David in 1998, and 1 sister Avis Leis. Allen Alfred Downer Jr., age 75 of McGregor died Tuesday, September 13, 2011 at the St. Luke???s Hospice Unit in Duluth, MN. Allen was born February 8, 1936 at Newburyport, Mass. the son of Allen and Dorothy Downer. He grew up and attended schools in Newburyport, Mass. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army in 1953 and served for 20 years having served in Korea and Vietnam as well as other countries throughout the world and bases in the United States. He married Theresa Delores Silverio on September 12, 1954 at Beverly, Mass. He retired from the Army in 1973 and they moved to the McGregor, Minnesota area. He then worked for Diamond Tool in Duluth and also part time for Aitkin County Human Services as a driver. He was a member of the VFW and American Legion Posts. He is survived by his wife Theresa Downer of McGregor; son and special friend: Charles J. Downer and Danita Slosson of Duluth, MN.; 2 Grandchildren: Lisa Downer and Ryan Olson; Great Grandchildren: Lilly Downer, Layla Downer, Logan Downer, Lawson Downer, Hattie Olson, Kiah Vasquez, Hannah Vasquez, and Mikah Vasquez. Also surviving are two brothers: Raymond Downer of Newburyport, Mass.; John Downer of Las Vegas, Nev. And sister: Dorothy Root of Worcester, Mass. and special friends: Mike and Laurie Decker of Mahtowa, Mn. and Robert and Sheila Merritt of McGregor. Robert was born September 4, 1932 at Luck, Wisconsin the son of Hans and Kirstine (Neilsen) Rasmussen. He grew up and attended schools at Luck. He then worked on the family farm before serving in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He married Betty Jean Torino in North Carolina and they moved to St. Paul, Mn. and made their home. He worked as a Truck Driver and also drove Bus for Greyhound Bus Lines. He was a member of the McGregor VFW Post. He is survived by 2 sons: Bob (Joanne) Rasmussen of Rush City, MN.; Jerry Rasmussen of Los Osos, Calf.; daughter: Darlene Levasque of Andover, Mn.; 12 grandchildren, 10 great grandchildren; brothers: Harry Rasmussen of Luck, Wisc., Hans Rasmussen of Ione, Iowa, Magnus Rasmussen of Danbury, Wisc. She was born March 20, 1935 in Chicago, IL. to Leon and Iris (Daniels) Mann. She was united in marriage to Kenneth Swanson. Lue lived life to the fullest, always looking for the next adventure. She had a special compassion for all animals. She was very aware and helpful to the needs of many and supported many charities. She was preceded in death by her husband Kenneth, brother Wayne Mann, sister Vickie Schnobrich, brother-in-law Ray Rutske, and her parents Leon and Iris (Daniels) Mann. Lucille was born August 8, 1913 at Frazee, Minnesota the daughter of Harry and Elizabeth (Daubenspek) Holmer. She grew up and attended schools in Frazee. She then moved to Minneapolis and worked as a nanny and housekeeper. She married Samuel Stapleton in 1943. They lived in various place in Minnesota and North Dakota before moving to Aitkin in the early 1950???s. She has lived here since. She raised her family and also worked as a cook. After her husband???s death in 1969 she worked as a nursing assistant for the Aitkin Community Hospital for 25 years. She enjoyed knitting, needlework, sewing, quilting and playing cards. She is survived by son: Richard (Marjory) Holmer of Topeka, Kansas; daughter: Dianne (Clifford) Tomoson of Alexandria, Mn.; 7 Grandchildren; 15 great grandchildren and 1 great great grandchild; 1 brother: Harry Holmer of Silver Bay, MN.; 4 sisters: Betty Palmer of Frazee, Mn.; Ethel Maves of Detroit Lakes, MN.; Alice Arndt of Bemidji, Mn.; Donna Luptak of Bismark, North Dakota; and numerous nieces and nephews. Gary C. Lamke, age 66 of Palisade formerly of Watertown, Wisconsin and Ironwood, Michigan died Saturday, September 10, 2011 at Essentia Health St. Mary???s Medical Center in Duluth, Minnesota surrounded by his loving family. Gary was born March 12, 1945 at Aitkin, Minnesota the son of Francis and Eva (Ward) Lamke. He attended schools in Aitkin and then the last three years of high school at Glenville High School in Glenville, MN. He then served in the U.S. Marine Corps during the Vietnam War. Upon his discharge he moved to Ironwood, Michigan where he worked as a diesel mechanic and then in the mines for a time. He then moved to Watertown, Wisconsin and worked as a diesel mechanic there for 30 years before retiring in 2004. Gary married Danielle M. Vuckovic on July 3, 1965 at Greenwich, Connecticut. Gary and Danielle moved to the Palisade area after his retirement in 2004 and have lived here since. Gary was a member of the VFW and American Legion Posts. He enjoyed hunting and 4 wheeling. He also enjoyed attended the county board meetings as he was very civic minded. Pearl Geneva (Roberts) Hammond, 93 of McGregor died Monday, August 29, 2011 at Aicota Health Care Center in Aitkin with her family by her side. She was born March 29, 1918 in Iona Township, Todd County, MN. to Lewis and Minnie (Dreimann) Roberts. Pearl was united in marriage to Harold S. Hammond on May 17, 1936 in Eagle Bend. They had three children, Douglas, Allan, and Terry. Pearl and Harold hosted many dances at their homestead in Todd County. They later moved to Minneapolis where she worked as a cook at Riverside Elementary School in Bloomington. She enjoyed volunteering at the Methodist Church in Bloomington. The family later moved to Big Sandy Lake near McGregor. Pearl liked snowmobiling, fishing, bowling, playing cards, baking, and gardening. She loved dancing. They enjoyed dancing at various ballrooms in Minneapolis and Big Sandy Lake. In her later years Pearl was a resident at Aicota Health Care Center where she enjoyed the many activities as well as helping other residents when she was able. She enjoyed going to the Dairy Queen for a chocolate blizzard, chicken strips, and French fries. She was preceded in death by her parents Lewis and Minnie, stepfather Erling Grane and brother Edward Roberts. Wesley B. Kisling, age 86 of Palisade, formerly of Golden Valley, MN. died Sunday, August 28, 2011 at the Aicota Health Care Center in Aitkin. Wesley was born June 3, 1925 in Minneapolis, Minnesota the son of Benjamin and Ida (Walschlager) Kisling. He grew up and attended schools in Minneapolis. At the age of 18 he entered the U.S. Army and served during WW II in North Africa, Italy and Yugoslavia. Upon his discharge he returned to Minneapolis and attended Dunwoody Institute. He then worked as a carpenter for almost 60 years. He married Gertrude Schmidt on October 19, 1951 in Minneapolis. They made their home in Golden Valley until moving to the Palisade area, Lake Esquagamah, in 1986. They have lived there since. He enjoyed Carving decoys and figurines, hunting and fishing. He is survived by his wife Gertrude of Palisade; sons: Bruce Kisling and Dale (Elizabeth Kisling), daughters: Gail Kisling and Laura Kisling all of Golden Valley, MN. 2 grandsons: Benjamin and Daniel Kisling both of Monticello, Mn. and 1 sister: Lorraine Amerson of St. Louis Park, Mn. A graveside service will be held Thursday, September 8, 2011 at 1:30 pm assembly area 5 at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery with military honors being performed by the Ft. Snelling Honor Guard. Elsie M. Hietalati, 91 of McGregor died Saturday, August 27, 2011 at Northland Village in McGregor. She was born December 18, 1919 in Lawler to Emil and Hinni (Kallio) Lundeen. She attended Aitkin Schools. Elsie was united in marriage to Edwin J. Hietalati on June 16, 1940 in McGregor. She was a devoted Mother, grandmother and great-grandmother. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Edwin in 2003, two grandchildren Scott Kareen and Rory Olson, son-in-law Ed Kareen, three brothers and four sisters. Maynard E. Adams, 88 of Aitkin died August 24, 2011 at Golden Horizons in Aitkin. He was born October 9, 1922 at the family farm in Lester Prairie to Orest and Leatha (Packer) Adams, the oldest of ten children. He attended country school. Maynard was a U.S. Army Veteran serving in World War II. He worked as a machinist at Char-Lin Eaton retiring in 1982. He moved to Malmo where he lived until moving to Golden Horizons in 2008. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers Howard, Willard, Vernon, and Floyd, sister Lois Streich, brother-in-laws Loren Steich and Gerhart Spittstoeser, sister-in-law Emma Adams, nephews Gary, Dale, and David Adams. She attended Aitkin Schools and confirmation class at Bethel Lutheran Church in Palisade. She enjoyed gardening, playing cribbage, and sewing. Eugene C. Knutson

Eugene C. Knutson, age 79 of Palisade died Thursday, August 11, 2011 at the Riverwood Health Care Center in Aitkin. Eugene was born November 25, 1931 in McGregor, Minnesota the son of Theodore and Sylvia (Deremo) Knutson. He grew up in the McGregor area and attended the Bellhorn Bay School and the McGregor School. He enlisted in the U.S. Marine Corps and served in Korea. He was involved in the Battle of Chosin where he was wounded and received the Purple Heart. Upon his discharge he returned to McGregor for a short time and then moved to Minneapolis and worked for a Casting Company. He married Donna M. Koskovich on January 11, 1958 in McGregor. They moved back to McGregor in the early 1970???s and they purchased what is now the Buckhorn bar and operated that for a number of years. He then started the sanitation service in McGregor and operated that until 1988 when he retired. They started spending winters in Texas in 1991 and then bought a home and lived in Texas for a number of years before returning to Minnesota and settling in Palisade in 2005. They have lived there since. He was a lifetime member of the VFW, the Military Order of Purple Hearts and was a member of the DAV. He enjoyed bowling, golfing and woodworking. He is survived by his wife Donna M. Knutson of Palisade; 3 daughters: Deborah Knutson of Austin, Texas; Roberta Knutson of Shakopee, MN.; Jennifer Knutson of Austin, Texas; 3 grandchildren: Amanda Rob) Grace, Noelle Knutson, Logan Olson and 2 great grandchildren: Santana Grace, and Nathaniel Knutson. He is also survived by sister in laws: Shirley Knutson of Minneapolis; Audrey Knuston of McGregor and Betty (Jerry) Wickstrom of Palisade and numerous nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his Daughter: Suzanne Knutson, father Theodore Knutson, mother Sylvia (Knutson) Enemark, brothers: Theodore Knutson and Harvey Knutson and Sister Donna Rohlf. A memorial service will be held Friday, August 19, 2011 at 11 AM from Bethel Lutheran Church in Palisade with Rev. William Sass officiating. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the services at the church. Burial will be at a later date at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery. James R. Smith, age 87 of Aitkin died Thursday, August 4, 2011 at the Aitkin Health Services in Aitkin. James was born August 13, 1923 in Rabbit Lake Township of Aitkin County (near Malmo) the son of Dewit and Belva (Richards) Smith. He attended the Rabbit Lake School and then the Aitkin High School. He enlisted in the U.S. Army and served during WW II. Upon his discharge in 1946 he returned to the Aitkin area. He married Edna Westerlund on January 2, 1948 in Minneapolis. They lived in Aitkin through the 1950???s and he worked in the mines at Crosby. He then worked as a heavy equipment operator and followed the work and lived in various states. In 1989 he retired and lived in the State of Washington for 3 years and then moved to Port Mille Lacs, then Malmo and eventually to Aitkin where he has resided the past 18 years. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, camping, gardening and traveling. He was a member of the 49er???s union. Earl L. Lindgren, age 73 of Aitkin and McGregor areas formerly of Warba and Racine, Wisc. Died Monday, August 1, 2011 at the Riverwood Health Care Center in Aitkin. Earl was born August 9, 1937 at Grand Rapids, Minnesota the son of Carl and Veronica (McCauley) Lindgren. He grew up and attended schools in Warba. In the early 1950???s he moved to Wisconsin and then enlisted in the U.S. Navy and served from 1954 until his discharge in 1957. He then enlisted in the U.S. Army and served from 1957 to 1960. Upon his discharge from the army he went to work for American Motors. He also worked road construction for a number of years. He married Charlotte M. Spencer on April 13, 1963 at Kenosha, Wisconsin. They lived in Racine, Wisc. For a time and then moved to Minnesota and in 1976 he moved to the Aitkin area and has lived in the Aitkin and McGregor area???s since. In his younger days he enjoyed hunting and fishing. He also enjoyed collecting clocks. He enjoyed life and especially loved his family. He is survived by his wife Charlotte Lindgren of Aitkin; son: Duane C. Lindgren of Aitkin; daughters: Darlene (Delano) Maudal of Roseville and Debbie Lindgren (Kelly Jensen) of Cambridge, Mn.; 11 grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren; 1 brother: Edward (Helen) Lindgren of Pengilly, MN.; and nieces, nephews and cousins. He was preceded in death by his father, mother and step father. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Friday, August 5, 2011 at 11 AM from St. Paul???s Catholic Church in Warba with Fr. Robert DeRusha Robert Daniel DeRusha ''Clammer'' 69 of McGregor passed away July 21, 2011 in his home after a battle with Mesothelioma Cancer. Robert was born on December 10, 1941 in Cloquet to Cyril and Lula (Kehn) DeRusha. He was the captain of his high school golf team and continued playing golf for several years after. He won several tournaments and obtained quite a collection of trophies throughout the years. He won the Big Lake Club Championship for seven consecutive years and had the course record at one time (25), and five holes-in-one. He served 3 years in the US Army right after graduating from the Cloquet Senior High School in 1959. He took pride in his 30 years of being a groundskeeper between the Big Lake Golf Club, Cloquet Country Club and Floodwood Golf course. He also worked at the US Postal Service, Conwed Corporation, and IDS #94. He enjoyed fishing, golfing and watching baseball, football, and golf. Clammer was a guitar player and singer for many years in a band known as ???The Rubber Band???. The band played at several local establishments and weddings. He enjoyed spending time with family and friends singing and playing his guitar around the bonfire. He will be sadly missed by his family and friends. Paul Gordon Fink, 60, formerly of Aitkin, died unexpectedly of coronary heart disease the evening of July 9, 2011 in Scottsdale, AZ. He was born April 9, 1951 in Jackson. He lived a remarkable and adventurous life. He was a kindhearted veterinarian and skilled surgeon. He was humble in his abilities, graduating as a doctor by age 24 while putting himself through college. He owned Aitkin Vet Clinic for 18 years. He moved to Phoenix, AZ. to start a new life. There he worked at the Arizona Humane Society which was a good fit for his abilities and his compassionate beliefs in animal care. He was an active member of AVMA for 37 years. He looked forward to retiring to Minnesota and fishing with his family and friends, woodworking as his father Lloyd had taught him and traveling in his airplane he and Katherin named ???Madeline???. He was an avid reader and always had an opinion on everything and if he didn???t understand something he set out to learn about it. He was extremely kind and generous and will be greatly missed by his family and friends. Paul would only want celebration in his remembrance. He was a Christian and believed he would be reunited with his mom Evie and dad Lloyd whom he talked of often in this life. Paul is survived by his wife: Katherin (Dingman) Daughters and sons-in-law: Brynne (Fink) Campbell and Dave Campbell of Elk Mound, WI. They made their home in Aitkin and Dennis worked for the Mille Lacs Electric Cooperative from 1990 until this past May of 2011. He was a member of the Minnesota Trappers Assn. He enjoyed hunting and trapping and also doing flea markets and antiquing. He moved with his family at a young age to Dairyland, Wisconsin where he grew up and attended schools. He served in the U.S. Army from 1950 to 1952. Upon his discharge he returned to Wisconsin and worked in the woods for a time. He married Leona Harris on November 12, 1954 in St. Paul. They made their home in Anoka for over 50 years and Norman worked for Pacific Mutual Door Co. for over 33 years. In 1996 they moved to the Aitkin area and have lived here since. He is survived by his wife Leona Chilstrom of Aitkin; sister: Darlene J. Shafer of Phoenix, AZ., sister in law: Shirley Chilstrom of Blaine, MN.; niece: Kimberly Ann, nephews: Gary Robert and David Allen and numerous cousins and friends. John Weimer

John Weimer, age 94 of Palisade died Monday July 4, 2011 at the Riverwood Health Care Center in Aitkin. John was born April 17, 1917 in Kingman Township of Renville County, Minnesota the son of Christoph and Ella (Stoeber) Weimer. He moved with his family to the Palisade area where he attended the Waukenabo School. He served in the Civilian Conservation Corps from 1935 to 1937. He then worked on farms in the area before serving in the U.S. Marine Corps during WW II. Upon his discharge he settled in Aitkin. He married Bessie Zilverberg on February 3, 1945 in Aitkin. He worked in the Post Office and then was a rural mail carrier for many years. His wife Bessie died in 1975. He married Viola I. (Clayton) Scott on August 28, 1976 in Aitkin. They lived in Aitkin for a time and then built a home in White Elk Township and have lived there ever since. He also worked in Aitkin cutting trees. He was a member of St. John???s Lutheran Church in Aitkin; the Aitkin American Legion Post, the Aitkin VFW Post, and The Disabled American Veterans. He enjoyed fishing, picking berries and cutting and selling firewood. He is survived by his wife Viola Weimer of Palisade; Children and spouses: Diane and Byron Schlagel of Aitkin; Robert and Colleen Weimer of Rose Creek, Mn.; Arnie Weimer of Juneau, Alaska; Stanley and Cindy Weimer of Aitkin; Betty and Roger Stidolph of Juneau, Alaska; Helen and Jason Hayes of Creswell, Oregon; Carla Gamman of Bothell, Washington; Alice and Don Browne of Minneapolis; 12 grandchildren; 10 great grandchildren; 1 brother: Richard (Elaine) Weimer of Lockport, Ill.; 3 sisters: Lorraine Mindrum of Aitkin; Ella Kingsley of Hill City; Lydia Wiswell of Young America, MN.; brother in law: Norman Berg of Hill City; sisters in law: Agnes Weimer of Aitkin; Virginia Weimer of Eagle River, Wisc.; Lola Ann Weimer of Hill City. He was preceded in death by his parents; First Wife Bessie in 1975; sisters: Marie Clark, Margaret Nollette, Frances Berg; brothers: Henry, Vernon, Raymond, Fredrick, Charles, Frank, Albert, and Martin. A memorial service will be held Sunday, July 17, 2011 at 1 PM from St. John???s Lutheran Church in Aitkin with Rev. David Becker officiating. Visitation will be Saturday, July 16 from 5 to 7 PM with a prayer service at 6:30 PM at the Sorensen-Root-Thompson Funeral Home. Interment will be in the Spencer Cemetery. Howard A. Franzen, 92 of Palisade died Wednesday, June29, 2011 at Golden Horizon in Aitkin. He was born June 24, 1919 in Palisade to Axel and Anna (Turnrose) Franzen. He grew up and attended school in Palisade. Howard was united in marriage to Delores Keath on November 2, 1943 in El Paso, TX. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving in WW II. He was employed as a truck driver for Herbison Bridge Construction Company. He was a charter member of the Palisade Lions. Irene A. Mendiola, age 86 of Jacobson formerly of Los Angeles, Calf. Died Wednesday, June 22, 2011 at her home. She was born August 13, 1924 at Los Angeles, California the daughter of Drank and Frances (Martinez) Sepulvada. She grew up and attended schools in Los Angeles. She married Eldon Nappe and they made their home in the San Fernando Valley. She then married John Mendiola and they continued to live in the San Fernando Valley. In 2006 Irene moved to Minnesota to live with her daughter and son in law who cared for her these past years. She is survived by her daughter and son in law: Charlie and Donald Dinneen of Jacobson; 4 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, 1 sister: Alma Musselman and 1 brother Roy Sepulvada both of Los Angeles, Calf. Darryl B. Ames, age 71 of McGregor died Sunday, June 19, 2011 at St. Lukes Hospital in Duluth, Minnesota. Darryl was born May 10, 1940 at Duluth, Minnesota the son of Herbert and Bartella (Rooney) Ames. He grew up and attended schools in Duluth, Minneapolis and High Springs, Florida. He returned to Minneapolis and worked for the Onan Co, Artic Cat and Hoffman Engineering. He married Alma Jean Nielsen on December 7, 1964 at Watertown, South Dakota. They lived in Minneapolis, Coon Rapids, Isanti, Ramsey and retired to McGregor in 1998. He enjoyed riding motorcycles and enjoyed tinkering with anything mechanical or electrical. He is survived by his wife Jean Ames of McGregor; daughter: Christine Glanville of Hibbing, MN. son: Steven Ames and Carla Gilbert of McGregor; 5 grandchildren: Timothy, Gina, Kayla, Jasmine and Micah and 3 great grandchildren: Sirinity, Kaylee and Rory and 1 sister: Gerry Stahn of Minneapolis and 1 brother Charles Ames of Bay City, Michigan. Also surviving are his beloved dogs. He was preceded in death by his parents, daughter Barbara and granddaughter Chelsey. A memorial service will be held Saturday, July 9, 2011 at 2 PM at Round Lake Presbyterian Church with Rev. John Yingling officiating. Jerry J. Ziske, 86 of Aitkin died Friday, June 17, 2011 at Aitkin Health Services. He was born February 24, 1925 in Aitkin, the son of Frank and Ide (Best) Ziske. He grew up in Aitkin, graduating from Aitkin High School. He was active in the school theater program. Jerry was a U.S. Army veteran. His family operated a farm on Spirit Lake and then started Ziske???s Resort on Spirit Lake. His parents, along with Jerry, and his brother James operated the resort for many years. He enjoyed traveling to Mexico and spending time there. He was a former member of the Aitkin Masonic Lodge. Jerry is survived by nieces, nephews and friends. He was preceded in death by his parents Frank and Ide (Best) Ziske, three brothers: Chuck Ziske and Bob Ziske and James Ziske, and his sister Dorothy Phillips. Memorial services will be held 11 AM - Saturday, June 25, 2011 at Sorensen-Root-Thompson Funeral Home in Aitkin. Reverend Donald Norman will officiate. (Peterson) Martin. He graduated from Humboldt High School in St. Paul. He was a U.S. Army Veteran serving in WW II. Charles was united in marriage to Constance M. (Harder) on August 24, 1972 in Watertown, SD. He worked for 57 years as an over the road truck driver. Gary Lee Olson, age 70 of Aitkin formerly of Minneapolis and a retired Minneapolis Police Officer, died Friday, June 10, 2011 at the St. Cloud Hospital in St. Cloud, Mn. Gary was born August 4, 1940 at Red Wing, Minnesota the son of Gordon and Gladys (Swanson) Olson. He attended school at Vesa, Mn. and then in Minneapolis graduating from Minnehaha Academy. He served in the U.S. Navy from 1958 to 1962. He then worked for Control Data and also did some construction work before joining the Minneapolis Police Department in 1966. He married Susan M. Israel on April 11, 1986 in Minneapolis. He retired from the Police Force in 1995 and he and his wife moved to Farm Island Lake near Aitkin and have resided here since. He was a member of the Aitkin American Legion Post and the Minneapolis Police Relief Assn. He was also an organ donor. He is survived by his wife Susan of Aitkin; 1 sister: Janet Hagberg of Minneapolis. He was preceded in death by his parents. A memorial service will be held Thursday, June 16, 2011 at 11 AM from the Sorensen-Root-Thompson Funeral Home in Aitkin, MN. with Rev. Dallas Smith officiating. She was born February 5, 1939 in Minneapolis the daughter of Joseph and Elizabeth (Hedican) O???Connell. She grew up and attended schools in Wayzata graduating in 1957. She then went to work for Bell Telephone Co. and worked a number of years in Minneapolis and also Denver, Colorado. She married Warren F. Bays on April 29, 1983 at South Lake Tahoe, Nevada. They lived in Denver and they operated Bays Equipment of which she was a partner and president of for 20 years. They purchased a home on Farm Island Lake near Aitkin in 1990 and moved to it permanently in 1995 and have lived there since. She had been a member of the Riverwood Hospital Auxiliary, and the Cuyuna Country Club. She enjoyed gardening, golfing, fishing and skiing. She is survived by her husband Warren Bays of Aitkin; step son: Morgan Bays of Westminster, Colo.; step daughter: Lisa Bays of Denver, Colo.; step grandson: Zachary of Westminster, Colo.; sister: Kitty (Doug) Clemenson of Aitkin; brother: Paul (Roxanne) Leding of Brooklyn Park, Mn. and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her parents, step father Lawrence Leding, and Brother Joe O???Connell. Harriette V. Koopman

Harriette Viola (Petersen) Koopman, 87 of Aitkin passed away June 4, 2011 at Riverwood Health Care Center in Aitkin. She was born January 8, 1924 in St. Paul, MN; the oldest daughter of Hans and Ermine (Brisson) Petersen of Hugo. As a young child, she moved with her family to the South St. Paul area near Concord Avenue and at age 12 they moved to Agate Street where they lived many years. Harriette worked as a waitress at the St. Paul Athletic Club, at International Harvester during WWII, she did lifelong missionary church work and was a sales clerk at Daytons in St. Paul until she was trained as an electrologist and became self employed in that field. Harriette married Al Koopman on December 1, 1945 and they farmed near Ramona, SD. They had two children, David, (1947) and Connie (1948). Al and Harriette also farmed near Yankton, SD before moving to St. Paul in 1962 where she and her husband were employed at Daytons, Harriette first as an elevator operator, then a sales clerk. Widowed in 1994, Harriette moved to Aitkin in 2000 to be near her daughter and son-in-law, most recently residing at Aicota Assisted Living. She is survived by son and daughter-in-law: David (Jane) Koopman, of St. Paul, daughter and son-in-law, Connie (Chuck) Pettersen of Aitkin 5 grandchildren: Kristen (Aaron) Williams, Michael (Mollie) Koopman, James Koopman, Karin (Grant) Jordahl and Katie Pettersen. 4 great-grandchildren: Michala Williams, Alex and Katie Koopman, and Autumn Joy Jordahl Many nieces, nephews, and 4 surviving siblings. She was preceded in death by her husband, parents, and 6 siblings: Donald, Robert, Joan Dettmann, Orv and Floyd Peterson, Stella Shoen. Funeral services will be Wednesday, June 8, 2011, 10:00 a.m. at Bethel Lutheran Church in Aitkin. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the service at the church. Burial will be at Oakland Cemetery in St. Paul at 3:30 p.m. A memorial service in St. Paul will be held at St. Mark???s Lutheran Church in the near future. Margaret (Marge) E. Nelson, 83, of McGregor, formerly Robbinsdale, passed away peacefully on May 31, 2011 in Duluth. She was born September 17, 1927 in Luverne to Ben and Anna (Husen) Fitzer. Marge was a graduate of Luverne High School. Marge was united in marriage to Robert T. Nelson on October 27, 1950 in Hopkins. She was a retired R.N., graduate of Northwestern Hospital School of Nursing, and a Northwest Airline flight attendant. She was involved in numerous volunteer and leadership roles within her church and community. Marge touched everyone she met and knew in a very special way. She was Preceded in death by her parents Ben & Anna Fitzer and nephew Gary Fitzer. She is survived by husband of 60 years, Robert (Bob) T. Norman D. Henslin, age 75 of McGregor formerly of Shoreview, Mn. Died Friday, May 27, 2011 at the Riverwood Health Care Center in Aitkin, Minnesota. Norman was born on June 9, 1935 in St. Paul, Minnesota the son of Delbert and Lorraine (Cline) Henslin. He grew up and attended schools in St. Paul graduating from Humboldt High School in 1953. While in school he started working for a printing company. He then served in the U.S. Army from 1957 to 1959. He then worked as a lithographer for many years and retired from the Mellosmello Printing Co. He began coming to the McGregor area in 1992 and he moved here permanently in 2002 and has lived here since. He enjoyed fishing and helping people any way he could. He is survived by his daughter Tracy Lynn Henslin of La Mesa, Calf.; sisters: Priscilla Gillen of South St. Paul, MN.; Marlis Floe of McGregor, Mn. and brother Merv Henslin of North St. Paul, MN. And nieces nephews and many close friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Billie Davis and brother Stan Henslin. C. Louise Hasskamp, age 77 of Aitkin died Thursday, May 26, 2011 at the Aicota Health Care Center in Aitkin. Louise was born July 10, 1933 in St. Paul, Minnesota the daughter of Theodore and Esther (Borgmann) Arens. She graduated from the Aitkin High School in 1951 and then attended the College of St. Scholastica in Duluth earning her Bachelor of Science Degree in Nursing, R.N. License in 1955. Her first RN job was at the V.A. Hospital in Iowa City, Iowa for 1 year. She married David D. Hasskamp on September 29, 1956 in Aitkin. She worked at the Aitkin Community Hospital for 1 year and then went to work at Dr. Closuit???s new clinic and worked there for seven years. In 1964 she became certified as a Public Health Nurse after completing studies at the University of Colorado at Denver, Colorado. Louise then worked for the Aitkin Public Schools as a Public Health Nurse for 23 years. She was forced to retire in 1987 due to rheumatoid arthritis. Louise was named Minnesota School Nurse of the Year for 1985-86. Louise served as the first chairman on the Kinship Board as she and others worked hard to get this established. Louise was also instrumental in helping create the Aitkin???s Children Center. Louise served as the ???Kids??? board chairman in 1975. Louise, along with her husband Dave, was also a strong supporter of the development of the Jacques Art Center, and served as board chair for a number of years. Louise is survived by her husband Dave Hasskamp of Aitkin; Children Bill and Mary Ann Hasskamp of Challis, Idaho; Mary Louise and Dan Howe of Wyendotte, Michigan; 3 grandchildren: Kate, Jenny and Thomas; 1 sister: Theodora Dahle of Edina, Mn. And San Diego, Calf. She was preceded in death by her parents, grandson David Howe, and favorite puppy Sadie. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, May 31, 2011 at 11 AM from St. James Catholic Church in Aitkin with Fr. Justin Fish officiating. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to services at the church. Vela Swanson, age 85 of McGregor died Tuesday, May 24, 2011 at the Aitkin Health Services in Aitkin, Minnesota. Vela was born October 12, 1925 at Middletown, Ohio the daughter of Lionel and Edith Marie (Hack) Gephart. She grew up and attended schools in Kentucky. She married David Livingston on July 19, 1942 at Las Vegas, Nevada. They made their home in California. David died in 1949. Vela continued to live and work in California and then married Robert P. Swanson Sr. on January 6, 1956 in Las Vegas, Nevada. They lived in California until 1970 at which time they moved to McGregor, MN. where they operated a gas station. She also worked for the sewing factory, was a hostess for the Chamber of Commerce and did baking and care giving. She enjoyed boating; fishing, dancing and loved to watch her boys play basketball as they were growing up. She is survived by Children: Robert P. Swanson Jr. and Ann of Grand Marais, MN., Rahn Cory Swanson and wife Sharon of East Bethel, Minnesota, David H. Livingston and wife Debbie of Lodi, California, John S. Livingston and wife Jeannie of Burlington, New Jersey, Joyce Ann Burdick and husband Russ of Tamarack, MN.; 1 sister: Velma Olson and husband Bill of Olympia, Washington; 17 grandchildren, many great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews. She was preceded in death by her Parents, husbands David Livingston and Robert Swanson, 1 daughter Barbara Livingston, 1 grandson, 1 great grandson, 1 brother and 2 sisters. A memorial service will be held Friday, June 3, 2011 at Noon from the Community Alliance Church near McGregor with Rev. Steve DeMars officiating. Burial will be in the Pine Needle Cemetery. Donald E. Hasselius, 68, of Aitkin and formerly of Blaine died Saturday, May 21, 2011 at Riverwood Health Care Center, Aitkin. He was born March 24, 1943 in Aitkin to Edward and Donna (O???Neal) Hasselius. He grew up in Aitkin and graduated from Aitkin High School class of 1962. He was the first state high school wrestling champion for Aitkin High School (1962). After high school he attended Dunwoody Institute, eventually becoming a master plumber. Donald was united in marriage to Janice Rush on June 30, 1963 in Aitkin. He was a member of the Minneapolis Plumbers Union Local #15 for over 40 years. Donald is survived by his wife Janice, 2 sons and a daughter-in-law: Daniel Hasselius of Blaine Todd (Cassie) Hasselius of Blaine Three grandchildren: Ashly (Justin) Hall, Dustin Hasselius and Malia Hasselius 1 great granddaughter: Haylee Hall Five brothers, 3 sisters, many nieces, nephews, relatives and dear friends. He was preceded in death by his brother Eddie and parents Edward and Donna (O???Neal) Hasselius. Funeral services will be 11:00A.M.???Friday, May 27, 2011 at Glory Baptist Church, rural Aitkin. Burial will be in Diamond Lake Cemetery. Visitation will be 5 to 7 P.M. Thursday at Sorensen-Root-Thompson Funeral Home in Aitkin and also 1 hour prior to the service at the church. Joyce K. (Knoedl) Dufresne, age 80 of McGregor formerly of St. Paul died Tuesday, May 17, 2011 at her home in McGregor. Joyce was born July 18, 1930 in St. Paul, Mn. The daughter of John and Anna May (Flowers) Knoedl. She grew up and attended schools in St. Paul having attended St. Agnes and Washington High School. She then worked for the City of St. Paul until 1952 when she married Gordon A. Dufresne on July 18, 1952. They made their home in Centerville and she raised her family. In 1974 they purchased the Greenwood Lodge near McGregor and operated that until 1980. She then cared for her husband until his death in 1984. She then worked as a cook for Banns, Pier 65 and the Block House until retiring in 1998. She had lived on Lake Minnewawa until 2008 at which time she moved into McGregor. She was a member of the Minnewawa Sportsman???s Club, the American Legion Auxiliary, a former Lioness, and Holy Family Catholic Church. She enjoyed Cooking, Quilting, Reading, crossword puzzles, and fishing. She is survived by her children: John Dufresne of McGregor, Dennis (Trudi) Dufresne of Grand Rapids, Mich., Paul (Kathy) Dufresne of Ramsey, MN., Anne (Mark) Reno of McFarland, Wisc., Barbara Rian of McGregor; 16 grandchildren, 2 great grandchildren, 1 brother Jack (Helen) Knoedl of Bloomington, Mn. She was preceded in death by her parents; husband Gordon in 1984, 1 sister Anna May Peet. A memorial service will be held Saturday, May 21, 2011 at 11 AM from Holy Family Catholic Church in McGregor. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to services at the church. Burial will be at Ft. Snelling National Cemetery at a later date. Arrangements are with the McGregor Funeral Home. John Anthony Ivory, 81 of Aitkin died Friday, May 6, 2011 at Riverwood Health Care Center in Aitkin. He was born October 19, 1929 in Dublin, Ireland to John and Mary (Miller) Ivory. Theater was John???s passion. He was involved in professional theater in Ireland and after moving to the United States he was involved in amateur theater throughout the Twin Cities. He worked as a shipping and receiving clerk for Washburn Laboratories in North Maplewood. John was united in marriage to Ardis (McIntyre) on June 30, 1956 in St. Paul. They moved to the Aitkin area in 1997. He was a member of St. John???s Lutheran Church at Cedarbrook. He is survived by his wife Ardis Nieces and nephews and families: Felix John Guido, Brian Anthony Guido, Cailin Mary Guido, Roan (Schneider) Mietzner, Lanette (Schneider) Pratt, Nona (Schneider) Ellsworth Brother-in-law: Felix Guido Sister-in-law: Maureen Schneider He was preceded in death by his parents John and Mary (Miller) Ivory and his sister Adrienne Guido. Gerald ''Jerry'' Johnson Gerald ???Jerry??? D. Johnson, age 76 of Aitkin formerly of the Anoka area died Friday, May 6, 2011 at the Aitkin Health Services in Aitkin, Minnesota. Jerry was born April 22, 1935 at Ada, Minnesota the son of Rueben and Bertha ???Birdie??? (Pinske) Johnson. He attended schools in Ada. He then worked as a farm hand for a time and then at the age of 17 he joined the U.S. Marine Corps. He served with the U.S. Marines in Korea. Upon his discharge he returned to Ada for a short time and then moved to the Twin Cities and worked as a machinist at Apache Co. and later at Perfection Grinding retiring in 1993. He married Kathleen E. Bauer on February 20, 1971 at Watertown, South Dakota. They made their home in Anoka County for many years. They have resided in the Aitkin area the past 10 years. He was a life member of the McGregor VFW Post and the Aitkin American Legion Post. He was an avid hunter and fisherman and enjoyed antiquing. He is survived by his wife Kathy (Bauer) Johnson of Aitkin; 2 sons: Mark (Cindy) Johnson of Isanti, MN., Tim Johnson of Arizona; 5 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren, 2 sisters: Tudy (John) Anthony of Grand Rapids, Mn.??? Jan (Mike) Ruch of Avon, Mn.??? Steve Johnson of Princeton, Mn., mother in law: Gladys Bauer of Anoka, Mn., brother in law: Jerry (Heidi) Bauer of Ramsey, Mn., sister in law: Jane Schoenecker of Stevens Point, Wisc., nieces, nephews and special pet Buttons. He was preceded in death by his parents, and father in law George Bauer. Funeral services will be held Wednesday May 11, 2011 at 11 AM from the McGregor Funeral Home with Rev. Erika Foss officiating. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the services at the funeral home. Burial will be in the Calvary Cemetery at Anoka, Minnesota.
