Karl Miles

Karl Miles, age 93 of Aitkin died Tuesday, March 16, 2010 at the Aicota Health Care Center in Aitkin after a long illness. Karl was born May 3, 1916 at Eaton, Ohio the son of Ralph and Priscilla (Rautsau) Miles. They moved to Emily, Minnesota when Karl was 9 months old. He attended country school in the Emily area. They later moved to Malmo and then to Aitkin. He worked as a logger, saw mill operator, and truck driver before serving in the U.S. Army for four years during WW II. He served in the in the Pacific Theater of operations. He married Dorothy Lidberg on December 15, 1946 at Aitkin, Minnesota. They made their home in Aitkin for a time and then moved to a farm on Lone Lake near Aitkin. He worked in the Crosby mines and did some carpentry work before spending two summers in Greenland building an air field. He then worked road construction as a heavy equipment operator until his retirement in 1979. He was a past member of the Masons and a member of First Lutheran Church in Aitkin. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening, and his family. He is survived by his wife of 63 years Dorothy Miles of Aitkin; Children and spouses: Gary and Barbara Miles of Big Fork, Mn.; Brian and Connie Miles of St. Cloud, Mn.; Frances and Tim Schoneck of Greeley, Colorado, Karla and Randy Patrick of Aitkin; 12 grandchildren, 12 great grandchildren and 2 sisters: Frances Smith of Arizona and Hazel Kath of Atlanta, Georgia. He was preceded in death by his parents, brothers and sisters and son Karl Bruce Miles. Funeral services will be held Saturday, March 20, 2010 at 1:30 PM from First Lutheran Church in Aitkin with Rev. Lance Isaacson officiating. Burial will be in the Lakeview Cemetery at Aitkin. Military honors will be provided by the Aitkin VFW and American Legion Posts. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the services at the church. Wayne D. Dickinson

Wayne D. Dickinson, age 79 of Aitkin formerly of the Twin Cities and Mora area died Wednesday, March 10, 2010 at his home near Aitkin. Wayne was born June 30, 1930 in Whited Township of Kanabec County, Minnesota (near Mora) the son of Orlan and Lillian (Dalen) Dickinson. He grew up and attended country school and then the Mora High School. He moved to the Twin Cities and worked for a time. He then joined the U.S. Navy and served from 1950 to 1954. Upon his discharge he returned to the Twin Cities where he and his first wife had their three sons. Wayne also attended the University of Minnesota and received his Associate Degree in Business. He worked for F.W. Dodge a division of McGraw-Hill Publishing starting out as a reporter in 1956. He was promoted to management and worked in offices in Tampa and Miami, Fl., Atlanta Ga., St. Louis, Mo. He finished his career with Dodge as a regional manager in Detroit, Michigan managing 4 offices and 49 employees. as a regional manager. He married Janice M. Rottinghaus on January 8, 1982 at Cincinnati, Ohio. They retired to Hanging Kettle Lake near Aitkin in 1990 where he and his wife built their log home on the lake. His avocation and joy came from carving fishing decoys and waterfowl at which he became very skilled, giving away many of his carvings to family and friends. He also liked fishing, golfing, reading, working outdoors, and especially visiting with his many friends. He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Aitkin, had served as a board member and treasurer of the Jaques Art Center in Aitkin and was a member of the ???Bennettville College Coffee Group???. Wayne was a good and loving son, brother, husband, father and friend. He always looked for the best in people. Wayne is survived by his loving wife Janice Dickinson of Aitkin; 2 sons and daughter in law: Bradley Dickinson and Mary Beth Conzett of Plymouth, Mn; Brian Dickinson of Plymouth, Mn.; former spouse Patricia Dickinson of Sturgeon Lake, Mn., 1 brother and sister in law: Keith and Jeanne Dickinson of Blaine, Mn.; 2 sisters and brother in law: Betty and Don Sjolie of Mesa, Arz. and Marilyn Herring of North Augusta, South Carolina; and many nieces, nephews, great nieces, great nephews and many good and valuable friends. He was preceded in death by his parents, and 1 son Wayne Jr. in 1977. A memorial service will be held Tuesday, March 16, 2010 at 11 AM from First Lutheran Church in Aitkin with Rev. Edith M. Sogard, 91 of Lindstrom and formerly of Kimberly died Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at Douglas County Hospital in Alexandria. She was born March 23, 1918 in Mora to Robert and Gertie (Van Essen) Claggett. She graduated from Mora High School. Edith was united in marriage to Glen Sogard on November 12, 1939 in Aitkin. She lived on a farm for many years near Kimberly and was a 4-H leader. She was a member of the Kimberly Community Church, its ladies aid, and taught Sunday school. They moved to Lindstrom in December of 1987. She volunteered at the nursing home in Chisago City, she enjoyed making quilts for her family, gardening, many kinds of crafts, and loved spending time with her family and grandchildren. Edith is survived by 6 children and spouses: Alton (Margaret) Sogard of Mesquite, TX. Shirley (Lee) Fielder of Alexandria Sheldon (Rosita) Sogard of East Bethel Stanley (Terry) Sogard of Lindstrom Marilyn Sogard of Cedar Rapids, IA. Zinda V. Fossum, age 94 of Aitkin died Thursday, March 4, 2010 at the Aicota Health Care Center in Aitkin. Zinda was born April 28, 1915 in Nordland Township of Aitkin County Minnesota the daughter of Charles and Inga (Sjodin) Mathson. She grew up and attended the White Oak School in Nordland Township. She helped on the family farm and then worked as a child care provider for a time and also as a waitress at local resorts in the area. During WW II she moved to Seattle, Washington and worked as a ???Rosie the Riveter??? for the Boeing Aircraft Co. She married Clarence Fossum on December 15, 1945 in Aitkin. They made their home in the Aitkin area and she has lived her most of her life. She worked at the Land O??? Lakes Turkey Processing Plant for a number of years. She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Aitkin. She participated in quilt making at the church for many years. She was an active member of the VFW Auxiliary in Aitkin and had served as it???s chaplain for many years. She enjoyed crocheting, knitting and gardening. She has resided at the Aitkin Health Care Center for the past seven years. She is survived by 1 daughter: Lois Fossum of Chicago, Ill. And numerous nieces, nephews and their families. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Clarence in 1979, 3 brothers and 4 sisters. Funeral services will be held Tuesday, March 9, 2010 at 2 PM from Bethlehem Lutheran Church in Nordland Township near Aitkin with Rev. Lance Isaacson officiating. Yvonne L. Cline, age 85 of Aitkin died Sunday, February 28, 2010 at her home. She was born December 2, 1924 in Aitkin, Minnesota at her family home the daughter of Carl and Signe (Olson) Anderson. Yvonne grew up and attended schools in Aitkin graduating from the Aitkin High School in 1942. She then attended the University of Minnesota for a year and then spent a year at the Radio Broadcasting School. She married Thomas B. Cline on June 25, 1948. They lived in St. Paul while he finished law school and then they moved back to Aitkin where Yvonne was a homemaker, businesswoman and manager of their beautiful Farm Island Estate. She was a member of the First Congregational Church in Aitkin, the doll club, and the Woodland Chapter of the Eastern Star. She enjoyed flower gardening, antiques, art and dolls. She was a member of the Aitkin Doll Club. She was a collector and well informed about her collections. Yvonne was a classy, gracious, and determined woman who enjoyed her family and friends. She is survived by her three children: Jeffrey Cline of Aitkin; Susan Cline of Aitkin; James and Paula Cline of Valley Center, California; 5 grandchildren: Evan Cline, Aron Cline, Ana Cline, Carl Cline, Caden Cline; 1 great grandchild: Caydence Cline; 2 sister in laws: Vivian Anderson of Aitkin; Loraine Anderson of Chanhassen, Mn. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Thomas in 1984, grandson John Cline, 4 brothers: Glen, Lyle, Robert and Don. Randy Joseph Hilton, age 31 of Hill City died accidentally on Friday, February 26, 2010. Randy was born August 11, 1978 at Grand Rapids, Minnesota the son of Larry and Lori (Doree) Hilton. He grew up and attended schools at Hill City graduating from the Hill City High School in 1997. He then attended Technical College in Staples. He worked as a heavy equipment operator and was currently working in the logging industry. He loved the outdoors especially hunting and fishing. The joy of his life was his children as he was a very loving and dedicated father. He is survived by his dad Larry, ma Lori; daughter Samantha Lynn; son Austin Butch??? Purl ''Buck'' Ashton Purl ???Buck??? Ashton, Jr., 80 of Hill City died Sunday, February 21, 2010 at Grand Itasca Hospital in Grand Rapids. He was born June 6, 1929 in Elburn, Illinois to Purl and Margaret (Schmidt) Ashton. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving in the Korean War,179th Anti Aircraft Artillery Operations Detachment. Buck was united in marriage to Edna LaValle on May 29, 1956 at the United Methodist Church in Palisade. He was a lifelong logger and farmer, owning a 240 acre cattle farm. He worked for Hawkinson Construction in Grand Rapids prior to attending welding school at Itasca Community College. He worked in the iron mines in Babbitt and then went to Barber School in St. Paul becoming a Master Barber and owning his own shop in Hill City. He was employed by the Aitkin County Road and Bridge Highway Dept. for 25 years retiring in 1997. He was a longtime NRA member and 49rs union member, and a member of the Hill City American Legion Post #340 for over 50 years. He was an avid outdoorsman and hunter, and enjoyed watching boxing. Ethel Marie Leasure, age 74 of Palisade died Saturday, February 13, 2010 at her home. Ethel was born August 22, 1935 at Hancock, Maryland the daughter of Marshall and Mary (Boar) Diehl. She grew up and attended schools at Everett, Pennsylvania graduating from the Everett High School in 1953. She married Lester Leasure on July 7, 1961 at Cumber4land, Maryland. They lived in Baltimore, Maryland until 1969 at which time they moved to Florida. They lived in Florida until 1975 and then moved to the Palisade area and have resided here since. She loved quilting and had made thousands of quilts over the years. James L. Bender, age 81 of Brainerd formerly of Aitkin died Thursday, February 11, 2010 at the St. Josephs Medical Center in Brainerd. James was born July 30, 1928 at Westgate, Iowa the son of Erwin and Clara (Wetzel) Bender. He grew up and attended schools in Westgate. He then worked on a farm for a time before enlisting in the U.S. Navy. He served from 1945 to 1947 and was involved with the testing of the Atomic Bomb. Upon his discharge he returned to Westgate and worked for John Deere Co. for a time. He then worked for his uncle and father at the Bender Chevrolet dealership as an auto mechanic. He married Dorothy L. Braatz on July 23, 1950 at Whittemore, Iowa. They moved to Aitkin, Minnesota in 1953 and he worked for Northern Service in Aitkin as an auto mechanic and then worked for Spalj Chevrolet in Crosby before working for Aitkin Motor Company in Aitkin. He retired in 1982 due to health issues. His first love was operating his greenhouse. He operated it from 1971 to 1996. He was a member of St. Johns Lutheran Church in Aitkin and had been a Sunday school teacher, sang in the choir and had served as a deacon of the church. He was also a member of the Aitkin American Legion Post. He is survived by 7 sons and daughters in law: Mark and Janet Bender of Coon Rapids, Mn.; Michael and Deborah Bender of St. Paul, Mn.; Jim and Ruth Bender of Aitkin; Jeffrey and Terrianne Bender of St. Paul, Mn.; George and Theresa Bender of Aitkin; Joseph and Michelle Bender of Coon Rapids; and John Bender of Las Vegas, Nevada; 2 brothers: Nathan Bender of Patal, Miss.; Tom Bender of Mt. Michael L. Monson, 49 of Aitkin died February 8, 2010 at his home. He was born March 9, 1960 in St. Paul to Jarrold and Pat (Maddy) Monson. He graduated from McGregor High School, class of 1978. Michael was united in marriage to Lisa Nelson December 3, 1983 at Grace Lutheran Church, McGregor. He worked throughout Minnesota building log homes for many families. He was a member of the McGregor Fire Dept. He made wood canoes, sculptured with his chain saw, enjoyed the outdoors, hunting, fishing, making maple syrup and spending time at the shack. Michael loved his family. He is survived by his wife Lisa 2 Children: Michael and Carli Brother: Marcus of Dallas, TX. Michael A. Horsch, age 64 of Aitkin formerly of St. Paul, Mn died Saturday, February 6, 2010 at his home at Blind Lake near Aitkin, Mn. Michael was born September 17, 1945 at St. Paul, Minnesota the son of Urban and Rachael (Hayes) Horsch. He grew up and attended schools in St. Paul graduating from St. Michaels on the Hill in 1963. He drove Taxi for over 37 years in St. Paul and then also worked as a dispatcher for a time. He married Mary Ann Kleinhans on June 13, 1981 at St. Paul. They had been coming to the Brainerd Lakes area for the past 20 years and they moved to Blind Lake in April of 2009. He loved fishing and was a handyman. He had a huge heart and was a savior of people and animals in their times of need. He is survived by his wife Mary of Aitkin; 3 daughters: Lynda Fisher of Maplewood, Mn.; Dawn Acree of Hastings, Mn.; Michele (Allen) Reed of Lake Elmo, Mn.; 1 sister: Sandra Stober of Kent, Washington, 5 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. She grew up and attended schools in Robbinsdale. She lived in Minneapolis until the early 1990???s at which time she moved north and had resided at Moose Lake, Kettle River and for the past 7 years at Lawler, Mn. Nina was a fun loving woman and enjoyed gardening, her dogs and cat, making jams and jellies for the neighbors, she collected pigs, and loved baking. She is survived by her fianc?? Oscar K. Espeseth, 97, of Aitkin passed away peacefully at his daughter???s home and went to be with his Lord in Heaven Saturday, January 30, 2010. A quiet man whose life spoke volumes, he was born January 24, 1913 in Fosston to Ole and Emma (Ellefson) Espeseth. At the age of 14 he was on his own working odd jobs for a farmer for 25 cents a day. A few years later he left North Dakota in his Model T Ford. While in Aitkin in 1935 Oscar sang in a quartet and played banjo at his older brother Willie???s church. While there he accepted the Lord Jesus Christ into his life. In January of 1937 Oscar, on his motorcycle, left with a friend to go find work in Oregon. The summer of 1939 found Oscar back in Aitkin where he met Alice Copley. They were united in marriage September 25, 1941 in Aitkin. He farmed mink and worked for Hannah Mining Co. He enjoyed music, woodworking, trapping, and motorcycles. He was a member of the Assembly of God Church in Aitkin. They had 7 children and Oscar???s God honoring gift of music continues to carry on through his family today. He is survived by 6 sons and daughters-in-law: Kermit (Charlene) Omar (Mary) David (Dorothy) Larry (Dawn) Lenny (JoEllen) Gary (Carrie) One daughter and son-in-law: Linda (Dan) Danielson 18 grandchildren and many great grandchildren 2 Sisters and brother-in-law: Irene Peterson Val (Craig) Wagner One brother Delmar Other relatives and friends. Beverly Just, age 79 of Aitkin died Wednesday, January 27, 2010 as the result of a catastrophic stroke. Beverly was born March 18, 1930 at the Swedish Hospital in Minneapolis, the third child and only daughter of Henry A. and Esther O. (Peterson) Gustafson. She had two older brothers Gerald and Henry. As a preacher???s daughter, Bev moved frequently with her parents. She lived in Minneapolis, East Grand Forks, Vancouver BC, Seattle, Chicago, and Charles City, Iowa. Bev studied sociology at the University of Minnesota, Seattle Pacific University in Washington and North Park University in Chicago. She worked for a time at the State Hospital in Fergus Falls, Mn. caring for those who were unable to care for themselves. An accomplished musician, Bev played cello, piano, organ, guitar, and auto-harp, and she had a strong alto voice that could do double duty as a tenor. Bev met her husband Bill while her parents served a Swedish Covenant Church in Winthrop, Mn. Bev???s mom would write letters about a kind young man who took care of his brother. Bev would come and watch Bill play ball and hit towering home runs. It was love that was forged with strong values and a commitment to family and faith. Bev and Bill were married on May 2, 1952 at Winthrop, Mn. They moved to Aitkin on their honeymoon, May 3, 1952 and they would make Aitkin their home for nearly 58 years. In 1956 they purchased Trackage Oil Station in Aitkin, and in 1962 bought Blegen???s Bait and renamed it Bill???s Sportsman???s Service (aka The Shop), and built a business that they sold to their son Paul and his wife Catherine in 1982. Bev was active in two local churches in Aitkin, Bethel Lutheran Brethren and Calvary Westside before she became a charter member of the Timberwood Church in Nisswa, Mn. Bev enjoyed life, leading Bible studies in homes and other various locations. She was a fan of waterskiing and reading a good book. She is survived by her children and spouses: David and Cindy; Paul and Catherine; Rebecca and Ron; John and Tanya; and Tim and Holly; Grandchildren: Benjamin(Jessica), Melissa, Nathanael (Jessi), Elizabeth, Thomas (Kristi), Sarah, Phillip, William, Anna, Morgan, Anika, and Ellie, and Great Grandchildren: Orinn, Abigail, and Hannah. She was preceded in death by her parents, Husband William in 2000, grandson Jonathan. A Memorial Service will be held Monday February 1, 2010 at 1:00 PM from the Timberwood Church at Nisswa with Pastor John Just officiating. Visitation will be from 4 to 8 PM Sunday at the funeral home and also 1 hour prior to services at the church. Roger John Jacobson

Roger John Jacobson, age 80 of Aitkin died Monday, January 25, 2010 at the Riverwood Health Care Center in Aitkin. Roger was born July 31, 1929 at Grand Rapids, Minnesota the son of Ernest C. and Anna (Bird) Jacobson. At the age of one he moved with his family to French Lake near Aitkin. Roger graduated from the Aitkin High School in 1947. He served in the Aitkin National Guard unit the 194th Tank Battalion which was activated in 1951 during the Korean Conflict. After his discharge, he worked distributing Purina Feeds throughout Minnesota and the Dakota???s and also hauled feed and grain to turkey farmers in this area. For several years Roger worked out of St. Cloud with Anderson Trucking and St. Cloud Meat Packing before moving back to Aitkin in 1966. Roger began making fiberglass hoods for the Scorpion Snowmobile Company of Crosby. He then worked with the Aitkin School District for a number of years driving bus and later supervising that department. Still later, he became involved in the design and manufacture of a variety of fiberglass products until his retirement in 1992. Roger is survived by his wife Nancy of nearly 60 years; children and spouses: Steve and Ginny Jacobson of Aitkin; Jim Jacobson of Fort Worth, Texas, Susan and Mike Ackerman of Deerwood, Tom and Lisa Jacobson of Merrifield, Mn.; Marjorie and Amir Safaie of Mountain House, Calf.; 1 brother Robert C. Jacobson of Minnetonka, Mn.; sister: Margaret and Felix Thompson of Chanhassen, Mn; six grandchildren and many nieces and nephews. A private family memorial service will be held at a later date. Alphild J. Halverson, age 94 of Aitkin died Saturday, January 23, 2010 at the Aitkin Health Services in Aitkin. Alphild was born April 6, 1915 at Barnes, North Dakota the daughter of John and Andrea (Ipsen) Larson. She grew up and attended country school at Barnes. She helped on the family farm and then married Norman A. Halverson in 1939 at Litchfield, North Dakota. They made their home in Ogilvie, Minnesota and then in 1952 they moved to Minneapolis. They lived there until Norman???s retirement and then the moved to Yuma, Arizona and lived there until Norman???s death in 1988. Alphild moved to the Aitkin area to be closer to her children and has lived here for the past 18 years. She enjoyed baking cookies, canning, and making quilts. She was a very active person and volunteered for numerous things. She is survived by 1 son and daughter in law: Wayne R. and Patricia Halverson of Aitkin; 2 daughters and son in law: Barbara and Robert French of Pinehurst, North Carolina; Sharon Bradley and special friend Dick Orr of Aitkin; 6 grandchildren, 11 great grandchildren, and 1 great great grandchild. Teresa Marie ''Terri'' Ellis Teresa Marie (Terri) Ellis, age 57 of Palisade died Friday, January 22, 2010 at the Cuyuna Regional Medical Center in Crosby. Teresa was born July 29, 1952 at White Bear Lake, Minnesota the daughter of Arthur and Marcella (Cunningham) Schenk. She grew up and attended schools in the White Bear Lake area graduating from high school there. She married Thomas Ellis on January 9, 1971 at White Bear Lake. They lived in Minneapolis for a short time and then moved to Palisade where they farmed for many years. Teresa went back to school at the age of 42 and attended the Duluth Business University and received her AA degree and graduated salutatorian of her class. She worked as a ward secretary the Crosby Medical Center and for the last 13 years worked as the medical secretary for the Home Health Partnership. She was a member of the Hill City Assembly of God Church. She loved to sing, enjoyed crocheting, snowmobiling, had a great sense of humor, and was an excellent cook. She was able to travel to Africa in 2008 to see her grandson. He attended schools in McGregor, Aitkin and Owatonna. After his schooling in Owatonna he moved to the McGregor area and have lived and worked with the Sather family for 52 years. He enjoyed being a farm hand and he took much pride in his work at the Sather???s Store. He enjoyed doing puzzles, riding the John Deere tractor, and gardening. He loved music and singing. He loved being around people. He is survived by 2 brothers: George ???Bud??? Watson and Donald Watson both of Oregon and 1 sister Adline Kincaid of Nevada. Henry N. Lidfors, age 93 of Aitkin died Monday, January 18, 2010 at the Aicota Health Care Center in Aitkin. Henry was born on July 7, 1916 at home in Bock, Minnesota the third son of Erik John and Anna Lidfors. He attended elementary school at Bock and graduated from the Ogilvie High School in 1934. Hank grew up helping on the family farm and he enjoyed playing basketball on the Ogilvie Basketball Team. Shortly after graduating he went to work at a CCC Camp for three years at Garrison, Mn. On June 10, 1940 he was united marriage to Elizabeth Skone at the Immanuel Lutheran Church in Cresco, Iowa. Hank worked at a dairy farm delivering milk, he also worked as a mechanic at the iron ore mines in Ironton, and then in 1946 he and Betty purchased the Deerwood Lumber Co. in Aitkin from her father C.E. Skone. Deerwood Lumber was a logging and sawmill operation, and Hank changed it into a retail lumber yard. They sold the business and retired in 1979. Hank was a longtime, dedicated, faithful member of First Lutheran Church in Aitkin, serving on the building committee after the church???s fire in 1953, was a deacon, Sunday school teacher, member of First Lutheran Brotherhood, served as a delegate to synodical convention at Seattle, and served as an usher for many years. He was a member of the Aitkin Fire Dept., the Jaycees, and Lions Club, as well as serving on the Aitkin School Board. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, playing softball, bowling, golfing, card playing, watching baseball, and football. He and Betty spent 22 winters in Mesa, Arz. after retirement. They sold their home on Cedar Lake and moved to Blackrock Terrace in Aitkin for 8 years and then in April of 2007 they moved to Aicota Assisted Living, and Hank moved to Aicota Nursing Home in February 2009. Henry is survived by his wife of 69 years Betty of Aitkin; 2 daughters: Rebecca (John) Jungas of Mountain Lake, Mn.; Bernice (special friend Blaine) Hayes of Duluth; Grandchildren: Kristin (Wes) Engbrecht, Karna (Dave) Hagen, Natasha Oreskovich, Brittany Hayes, great grandchildren: Alexander and Madison Engbrecht; Evan and Cole Hagen, brother and sister in law: Arnold (Marian) Lidfors of St. Louis Park, Mn.; sister in law: Vera Robinson of Forest Lake, Mn. She volunteered her time at her church and hospital. In 2001, she was an honorary chair for the Riverwood Health Care Center ???Lights of Love???. She was a very active member of St. James Catholic Church, serving funeral lunches and with the prayer chain. She enjoyed traveling with her husband, Donald to Alaska and Hawaii. Dave A. Andrews Sr., age 73 of rural Aitkin died Monday, January 11, 2010 at the Riverwood Health Care Center in Aitkin. Dave was born October 28, 1936 in St. Paul, Minnesota the son of August and Florence (DePew) Andrews. He grew up and attended schools in St. Paul and graduated from Johnson High School in 1954. He played football and also played hockey in the Canadian Major Jr. League and was involved with the Minnesota North Stars Hockey Team. He worked as a carpenter for many years. He married Marilyn K. (Liljenquist) Westerlund on May 30, 1980. Dave had been coming to the Aitkin area and staying at the Whitewood Resort on Spirit Lake in the 1970???s. He moved to the area permanently in 1980. He was instrumental in building the new Bethesda Lutheran Church as he worked as the superintendent on that project, he was a member of Bethesda Lutheran Church, he enjoyed golfing, playing pool, hunting, fishing, camping and just about anything outdoors. He also enjoyed building model ships. She graduated from Aitkin High School. Lois was united in marriage to Kenneth Lyons on November 28, 1942 in Aitkin. She worked in the probation office of the Aitkin County Court House and also operated the Rialto Theater with her husband Kenneth. She was a member of First Lutheran Church, Aitkin. Lois is survived by her son Charles (Kathy) Lyons of Coon Rapids One grandson Christopher Lyons of Milwaukee, WI. She was preceded in death by her husband Kenneth on May 5, 2009, one brother Jack Sugrue, and her parents. Robert L. Johnson, age 88 of Aitkin died Friday, January 8, 2010 at the Riverwood Health Care Center in Aitkin. Robert was born December 10, 1921 at Aitkin, MN. the son of Louis and Emma (Peterson) Johnson. He grew up and attended schools in Aitkin. He served in the U.S. Army Air Corps during WW II as a pilot and flew 51 combat missions in the 24 Liberator from 1941 to 1945. He also served in the U.S Air Force from 1950 to 1955. He received his bachelor???s degree from Purdue University and his master???s degree in Civil Engineering from University of California at Berkley. He married Lola M. Ramsey in 1944 in Charleston, South Carolina. He headed the State Board of Health Water Purification Program in Florida and was based out of Jacksonville, Florida. He later worked for Honeywell as an engineer on the Space Shuttle Program. He retired back to Aitkin in the early 1980???s and has lived here since. He married Dorothy Maples in 1991. He enjoyed building and designing things, politics and current events. He was a member of the 376 Heavy Bombardment Group Veterans Association, the Aitkin American Legion, and First Lutheran Church. He is survived by 1 son: Alan Johnson of Astor, Florida; daughter: Janet Allison of Jacksonville, Florida; 1 sister: Lois Tracy of St. Paul, Mn.; 5 grandchildren, 4 great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by son: Bruce Johnson, sisters: Norma Corolla, Hazel Cooper, and brother Lloyd Johnson. Funeral services will be held Saturday, January 16, 2010 at Noon from Bethlehem Lutheran Church with Rev. Cynthia Gray officiating. Burial will be in the Bethlehem Lutheran Church Cemetery. Dorothy was united in marriage to Robert Stannard Brown, Sr. on April 12, 1942 in Las Vegas, Nevada. They lived in Park Rapids from1948 to 1967 prior to moving to Pine River. For many years she volunteered at the Kitchigami Regional Library in Pine River. She enjoyed playing dominos and other games with her family, reading to her grandchildren and great-grandchildren, and working on her crossword puzzles. Frances ''Frankie'' A. Clasen Frances ???Frankie??? Clasen, age 96 of Aitkin died Tuesday, January 5, 2010 at the Aicota Health Care Center in Aitkin. ???Frankie??? was born March 22, 1913 at Aitkin, Minnesota the daughter of Nels and June (Mackaman) Landgren. She grew up and attended schools in Crosby graduating from the Crosby High School in 1930. She then went to work at the Aitkin County Court House in the Clerk of Courts office. She then moved to the Recorders office and worked for Bryce Kelsey. She married Walter D. Clasen on June 5, 1938 in Aitkin and they made their home here for most of their lives. They lived in Bloomington, Mn for a time and while there she worked for Federal Stamping Inc. They moved back to Aitkin in 1971 and retired. They wintered in Texas for 11 years. She was a member of the Aitkin Congregational Church and the Daughters of the American Revolution. She enjoyed taking pontoon rides on the lake. Her grandparents settled on Cedar Lake and since then there have been 6 generations of her family to live on Cedar Lake. She is survived by daughter and son in law: Jacquelyn and Gary Enberg of Aitkin; 2 grandsons and spouses: Joseph and Heidi Enberg, Christopher and Stacey Enberg, great grandchildren: Jacob, Zachary, Samantha and Madeline Enberg all of Aitkin. Also surviving is a sister in law: Isabelle Clasen of Long Prairie, Mn., nieces, nephews, cousins and many dear friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Walter in 1994, 1 brother: Myron Landgren, 1 sister and brother in law: Eunice and Del Ulman. Harris G. Johnson, age 91 of Aitkin formerly of Siren, Wisc., St. Paul, MN. and Fairfax, Mn. died Tuesday, December 30, 2008 at the Aicota Health Care Center in Aitkin, Mn. He was born December 16, 1917 near Fairfax, Minnesota the son of Arthur and Frieda (Besch) Johnson. He attended country schools School and then attended the University of Minnesota for three years. He served in the U.S. Army during WW II and served with the 9th Division. He was a recipient of the Purple Heart. Upon his discharge, he moved to St. Paul and worked as a flooring installer. He then started his own flooring company called Home Floor Company, Inc. and he operated it for about 25 years. He then lived in Siren, Wisc. until moving to the Aicota Health Care Center in Aitkin in July of 2006. He has lived here since. He was a life member of the VFW. Ivan was born February 2, 1942 at Jackson, Minnesota the son of William and Ruby (Yeadicke) Dunker. He grew up and attended schools in Jackson graduating from the Jackson High School in 1962. He then attended auctioneering schools and did some auctioneering as well as working at the Ford Dealership in Jackson. He also drove a bulk fuel truck for the Federated Coop for a time. He married Karen R. Anderson on August 12, 1966 at Jackson, MN. The lived in Jackson and he began a career as a welder. He worked as a welder for 38 years retiring in 2003. They lived in Plymouth, Mn. from 1972 to 1977 and then lived in the Princeton/Zimmerman area from 1977 to 2003. In 2003 they moved to the Aitkin area and have lived here since. He was a member of First Lutheran Church in Aitkin, enjoyed woodworking and fishing. He is survived by his wife Karen Dunker of Aitkin; Children and spouses: Paul and Zena Dunker of Clearbrook, Mn.; Marc Dunker of Foley, Mn.; Monica and Jeremie Roberts of Princeton, 5 grandchildren: Ethan Dunker, Nikole Dunker, Wesley Dunker, Heavenleigh Roberts, and Andrew Dunker. He grew up and attended schools in Aitkin and then served in the U.S. Army. He married Jane Hendrickson in 1955. Upon his discharge he attended the University of Minnesota for four years and received his degree. He then went to work as a salesman for the Johnson Culvert Company and he worked for them for many years. He then worked as a truck driver hauling heavy equipment. He has been retired for about the past 30 years. He was a member of the Masons. He enjoyed golfing, hunting and fishing. He is survived by brothers and sisters: Simon and Nadine Ecklund of Fayetteville, North Carolina; Marie and C.J. Beysellance of Washington, D.C.; Marvin Ecklund of Aitkin; Fern Kieselhorst of Phoenix, Arz.; George and Karen Ecklund of Boulder, Colo.; Eldon and Wendy Ecklund of Costa Rica; and many nieces and nephews. June was born July 23, 1921 at Barrett, Minnesota the daughter of Simon and Rose (Brekke) Anderson. She grew up and attended schools in Minneapolis graduating from the Minneapolis Vo-Tech High School. She then moved with her family to the Tamarack area and she worked at the Tamarack Hotel. She married Lester F. Maron on August 23, 1940 in Wrenshall, Minnesota. They made their home in McGregor until 1957 at which time they moved to the North Branch area were they operated a small country store. In 1966 they moved to Minneapolis and lived there before moving back to McGregor in 1980. She has lived in McGregor since. She was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church and had been very active in the church, A.R.T.S., Inc.; the Friends of the McGregor Library and the Writers club. She was a writer of stories and poems. She recorded the stories of her life and her observations about family, friends, and the world around her in her own petite, precise penmanship. She was proud of her self-published book ???All My Feathers of Time???. She enjoyed being with family and friends, and especially hosting her writers group with whom she published two other books. There was always coffee, cookies and banana bread available when people came to call. Helena was born August 18, 1929 at Manistique, Michigan the daughter of Gustaf and Dorothy (Fredrickson) Rydell. She moved with her family to Aitkin County as a young girl. They lived in Swatara for a time and then moved to the Fleming Community. She attended the Turner School and then the Aitkin High School from which she graduated from in 1947. She married Richard G. Dotzler on August 24, 1948 at Aitkin. She started work in the Aitkin County Auditors office on August 1, 1953 and worked in that office until retiring on January 8, 1991. She was the Aitkin County Auditor from the early 1980???s until her retirement. She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Aitkin, the Aitkin County Historical Society and had been its treasurer for many years; the Jaques Art Center, the Red Hat Society, a bowling league in her younger days, had sat on the state library board, had served as a 4-H leader for the Channel Champs and had been active in 4-H in just about every way. She had been honored by the 4-H for her many years of helping with the Plat Book Project and she had also been honored at the National Level for her many 4-H activities. She had also volunteered many years in helping Seniors do their taxes. She enjoyed traveling, sewing, and collecting trolls and vintage post cards. She had also served on the Spencer Township Board. She is survived by 1 son and daughter in law: Michael and Linda Dotzler of Anchorage, Alaska; 2 daughters and sons in law; Doreen Dotzler and Terry Leonard of Bethesda, Maryland; Diane and Thomas McEvoy of Minnetonka, Mn; 4 grandchildren: Dr. Taryn McEvoy, Dr. Timothy McEvoy, Kelly Dotzler, Shane Dotzler, and great grandchild: Charles Granzin. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Richard in 1984 and infant daughter. Funeral services will be held Thursday, December 17, 2009 at 11 AM from First Lutheran Church in Aitkin with Rev. Lance Isaacson officiating. Visitation will be Wednesday from 4 to 7 PM at the Sorensen-Root-Thompson Funeral Home and also 1 hour prior to the services at the church on Thursday. Burial will be in the Fleming Cemetery. Regina was united in marriage to Paul O. Weijanen on May 2, 1936 in Wisconsin. She enjoyed dancing, gardening, cooking and loved her grandchildren. She was a member of St. James Catholic Church, Aitkin. Dale E. Lambert, age 76 of Aitkin died Tuesday, December 8, 2009 at the Riverwood Health Care Center in Aitkin. Dale was born April 24, 1933 at Dassel, Minnesota the son of Eddie and Amanda (Nelson) Lambert. He grew up and attended country schools and then attended the Dassel High School from which he graduated in 1951. He then helped on the family farm before serving in the U.S. Navy for two years. He returned to Dassel upon his discharge and continued helping on the farm. He married Hazel Stangland on June 26, 1959. He was then working for 3M in Hutchinson and his career with 3M spanned 33 years until he retired in 1992. In 1992 they moved to Spirit Lake near Aitkin, Minnesota and have lived there since. He worked at Rutgers Resort as a grounds Keeper for 9 years. He and his wife also spent 5 winters in the Yuma, Arizona area. He and his wife made crafts and sold them at various craft shows. He enjoyed hunting, fishing, gardening and woodworking. He was a member of Ducks Unlimited and the Aitkin United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife Hazel Lambert of Aitkin; daughter and son in law: Shirley and Kane Viesselman of Hutchinson, Mn.; 2 grandchildren: Casey Viesselman and Cole Viesselman, and many special friends and family. He was preceded in death by his parents and 1 son Alan Lambert in 1989. Funeral services will be held Friday, December 11, 2009 at 11 AM from the Aitkin United Methodist Church with Rev. Judith Clark officiating. Burial will be in the Bennettville Cemetery. Vernon Miller, age 76 of McGregor died Monday, December 7, 2009 at the Fairview Ridges Hospital in Burnsville, Minnesota. Vernon was born September 21, 1933 at Crosby, Minnesota the son of George and Hilda (Palmer) Miller. He grew up and attended schools in McGregor graduating from the McGregor High School in 1951. He then served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He married Janet A. Mannelin on March 28, 1953 in McGregor, Minnesota. He attended Dunwoody from 1955 to 1957 and learned to do body work on cars. He worked for Iverson Chevrolet in McGregor for two years. He then went to work as a lineman for Mille Lacs Electric and worked for them for 35 years retiring in 1994. He served on the McGregor Fire Department from 1951 to 1983; the McGregor Ambulance Crew Chief from 1975 to 1985, Mayor of McGregor from 1977 to 1980 and 1983 to 1987; had served on the Aitkin Hospital Board for 9 years, was a member of Our Saviors Lutheran Church and president of the council and had served in many other offices in the church for over 50 years. Vernon had served as a scoutmaster, and taught first aid, gun saftey and snowmobiling saftey. He enjoyed woodworking and RV traveling. Vernon was a loving and devoted Husband, patient and wise father, and loving and proud grandfather. He is survived by his wife Janet Miller of McGregor; Children and spouses: Bruce Miller of McGregor and Nancy Miller of Maple Grove; Colleen and Fred Vivant of Northfield, Mn.; Laura and Jeff Schlagel of Aitkin; Alison and Brent Henze of Lakeville, 13 grandchildren: Chantell (Chad) Johnson, Aliina (Drew) Peterson, Amber Vivant, Courtney Vivant, Brandon Perrine, Levi Perrine, Jonah Perrine, Sampson Perrine, Taylor Vivant, Alex Vivant, Jacob Vivant, Sydney Vivant and Grace Bury; 3 great grandchildren, 1 brother and sister in law: Marvin and Vicki Miller of McGregor; brother in law: Merlin Zimmerman of Cloquet. He was preceded in death by his parents, Daughter Kelly Fischer, son in law: Mark Fischer, and Sister Charlene Zimmerman. Funeral services will be held Saturday, December 12, 2009 at 11 AM from Our Saviors Lutheran Church in McGregor with Rev. Henry Koopman officiating. Edward Roy Martin (Native Name: Biizhak) age 78 of McGregor died Monday, December 7, 2009 at his home. Edward was born June 25, 1931 at McGregor, Minnesota the son of Jim and Mary (Sam) Martin. He grew up in the Mille Lacs area and attended schools in McGregor. He later lived in Sawyer. He worked as an iron worker in the Twin Cities for many years retiring in 1986. He moved back to McGregor in 1987 and has lived here since. He enjoyed Hunting, fishing and the outdoors. He is survived by 3 children: Lisa Johnson of Minneapolis; Kristopher King and Neil King both of Orr, Mn.; 10 grandchildren, 1 great grandchild and 1 sister Agnes Chief, numerous nieces and nephews and Bud his faithful dog. Russell W. Chute, age 89 of the Hassman Community died Friday, December 4, 2009 at his home. Russell was born November 22, 1920 at Waldick, Morrison Township, Aitkin County, Minnesota the son of H.E. ???Ed??? and Julia (Hoving) Chute. He attended school in Morrison Township and then attended High School in Aitkin graduating in 1938. He married Lucille M. Cartie on October 12, 1944 at St. James Catholic Church in Aitkin. They started their farm raising turkeys for and dairy. He was a lifetime dairy farmer. He was a past member of St. James Catholic Church, current member of Holy Family Catholic Church, had served on various boards throughout the years. His main concern was always his family and his commitment to hard work on the farm. He is survived by his wife Lucille of Hassman; children and spouses: Anne Schaak of Minneapolis, Theresa and Marshall Hogenson of Prior Lake, Mn.; Betty Chute of Burnsville, Mn.; John and Debbie Chute of Hassman; Phillip and Colleen Chute of Hassman; Nine grandchildren: Michelle, Karl, Aaron, David, Eva, Thomas, Sarah, Alaina, and Owen Russell; 3 great grandchildren: Kyle, Kayleigh, and Kayden; 1 brother: Robert Chute of Aitkin. He was preceded in death by his parents, 1 brother Harold, 2 infant brothers and 1 infant sister. John L. Hogan, 99 of Aitkin died Friday, December 4, 2009 at Aitkin Health Services after a courageous battle with longevity. He was born July 4, 1910 in Minneapolis to John J. and Nell E. (Conway) Hogan. He graduated from North High School in Minneapolis and attended the University of Washington. He was the Twin Cities Amateur Featherweight Boxing Champion in 1928. John was united in marriage to Ella Howenstein on November 25, 1937 at St. Phillips Church in Minneapolis. He was a United States Navy Veteran serving in World War II. He was employed for 25 years with the Minnesota Highway Patrol and for 11 years with the State of Washington Transportation Commission. At the time of his death John was the oldest retired Minnesota State Highway Patrol Trooper. He was a member of the Aitkin Fire department, former member of the Moose, Eagles, Elks, and Lions clubs, former trustee of St. James Catholic Church, Past Commander of the Aitkin American Legion Post #86, Past Commander and Life Member of the Aberdeen, WA. American Legion Post #5, Past Chef de Gar Voiture of the 40et 8 of Aberdeen, WA. Charter Member of the Knights of Columbus Crosby Council, member of Minnesota Retired Police and Peace Officers Association, and Minnesota retired Highway Patrol Association. He is survived by 2 sons and daughters-in-law: John C. (Mona) of Princeton Thomas P. (Irene) of Montesano, WA. Two daughters and son-in-law: Diane (Russell) Kellerman of Aitkin Mary Jo Hogan of Tacoma, WA. (fiance??? She grew up on the family homestead and attended Bain Township School. Alice was united in marriage to Maurice Baker on April 19, 1931 in Aitkin. Alice was a homemaker and farmer. In January of 2007 she left her homestead farm and moved to Aicota Health Care Center. She liked living in her new community and in the state she loved the best, Minnesota. She enjoyed farming, traveling, gardening, dancing, crocheting, embroidering, quilting, playing card games, cooking, and baking, but most of all she enjoyed her family. She was a member of the Women???s DFL, Birthday Club, and Farm Bureau. Alice is survived 2 daughters and sons-in-law: Eunice (Harold) Hatfield of Palisade Margie (John) Sauer of Stillwater, OK. Mary was born April 8, 1934 in Litchfield, Minnesota the daughter of William and Amelia (Stueve) Monse. She moved at an early age with her family to the Aitkin area where she grew up and attended schools. She helped on the family farm and also worked at the Turkey Hatchery in Aitkin. She has lived in Aitkin most of her life except the past two years when she has resided in Brainerd. She loved the outdoors, fishing, walking, and visiting family and neighbors, and her travels to Alaska.
