Thelma M. Honeyager, 95, lifelong resident of Aitkin died November 17, 2009 at Aicota Health Care Center. She was born August 3, 1914 in Aitkin to William and Myrtle (Johnson) Bartles. She graduated from Aitkin High School. Thelma was united in marriage to Walter Honeyager on October 23, 1934 in Superior. She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law Jane and Don Bauer of Crystal 4 grandchildren: Michael Bauer of Crystal Lynda (Scott) Smeaton of Brooklyn Park Kenneth Johnson of Aberdeen, SD Pamela (Mike) Schifferns of Hastings, NE Four great grandchildren, other relatives and friends She was preceded in death by her husband Walter in 1972, daughter Judith Surface, granddaughter Joy Johnson, 6 brothers and sisters, and her parents William and Myrtle (Johnson) Bartles. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the 1:00P.M., Saturday, November 21, 2009 funeral service at Sorensen-Root-Thompson Funeral Home in Aitkin. Reverend Dallas Smith will officiate. George D. Kruse

George D. Kruse, age 71 of Tamarack died Saturday, October 31, 2009 at the Aitkin Health Services in Aitkin, Minnesota. George had many health issues since having a kidney transplant in 2003. He is finally resting in peace. He will be extremely missed by his whole family and many friends. George was born December 14, 1937 in Minneapolis, Minnesota the son of George and Beulah (Schwochert) Kruse. He grew up and attended schools in N.E. Minneapolis graduating from Edison High School in 1955. He married Barbara A. Fahrendorff on June 20, 1959 in Minneapolis. They moved to McGregor in 1981 and George sold insurance for the McGregor Agency until he retired in June of 2009. George spent 8 years in the Marine Corps Reserves. He was a member of the McGregor Lions Club and one of its past Presidents, Minnesota Deer Hunters Association, the Ruffed Grouse Society, Tamarack Sportsman???s Club and Ducks Unlimited. He is survived by his wife Barbara Kruse of 50 years of Tamarack; children: Keley (Mark) McNurlin of Aitkin; Kris (Wayne) Baezinger of Billings, Montana; Mike (Lisa) Kruse of McGregor; 8 Grandchildren; 2 great grandchildren and mother in law: Rodina Fahrendorff. He was preceded in death by his parents George and Beulah Kruse, father in law: Russell Fahrendorff, and sister in law: Audrey Bergman. A funeral service will be held Thursday, November 5, 2009 at 11 AM from the McGregor Funeral Home with Rev. Steve Demars officiating. Clifford Ray Rickhoff

Clifford R. Rickhoff, age 75 of Aitkin formerly of Fridley, Mn. died Friday October 30, 2009 at his home in Aitkin. Clifford was born August 1, 1934 in Graham Township of Benton County, Minnesota the son of Henry and Florence (Dalton) Rickhoff. He attended school in Benton County and then moved with his family to Fridley and attended schools there. He worked in grocery stores for a time and then served in the U.S. Army. Upon his discharge he returned to Fridley and continued to work for a time in Grocery Stores and then eventually went to work for Harland Check Printing Company as a maintenance man. He married Barbara Neumann in 1960 at Fridley, Mn. They made their home in Fridley. Barbara died in 1984. Clifford retired in 1994. He married Gayle Dietzman in 1986 and they moved to Aitkin in the mid 1990???s and have lived here since. Clifford was an avid fisherman and enjoyed camping. He is survived by his wife Gayle Rickhoff of Aitkin; daughter: Heather Brown of Woodbury, Mn.; son: Craig Rickhoff of Cambridge, Mn.; step children: Mark Edin of Champlin, Mn.; Scot Edin of Princeton, Mn.; Lori Hanson of Crystal, Mn.; brothers: Henry Rickhoff Jr. of Ramsey, Mn.; Don Rickhoff; sister: LaVonne Bishop of Willmar, Mn.; 8 grandchildren and 1 great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his first wife Barbara, infant daughter Heidi, parents, and 2 sisters Connie and Betty. A memorial service will be held Wednesday, November 4, 2009 at 11 AM from First Lutheran Church with Rev. Lance Isaacson officiating. Interment will be at Ft. Ethel Lillian Nelson

Ethel Lillian Nelson, 90 of Aitkin died Tuesday, October 27, 2009 at Riverwood Health Care Center in Aitkin. She was born December 18, 1918 in Palisade to Hugo and Maria (Arbor) Beck. She attended schools in Palisade. On July 22, 1939 Ethel was united in marriage to Chester Nelson in Aitkin. She was a house wife and mother, and worked for 15 years as a cook for the Palisade Schools. She was a member and very active at Bethel Lutheran Church in Palisade and when she moved to Aitkin she became a member of First Lutheran Church and their Ruth???s Circle. Ethel was blessed with many friends and lived her life for her family. She is survived by 2 daughters and sons-in-law: Martha (Leonard) Sundberg of Medford, OR. Marlene (Mike) Bonneville of Sun City, AZ. Russell L. Ruud

Russell Lawrence Ruud, age 83 of Palisade, Minnesota died Thursday, October 22, 2009 at the Kaiser Permanente Hospital in Newport Beach, California due to a heart attack. Russell was born on June 1, 1926 in Minneapolis the son of William and Helen Ruud. He graduated from Robbinsdale High School in 1944. He entered the Naval Reserve Officers Training Corps in 1944 and majored in Electrical Engineering at Marquette University in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. When the war ended, he completed his service as a seaman and then transferred to the University of Minnesota graduating in 1948 with a Bachelor of Science degree in Plant Industry. In 1964 he was certified to teach Agricultural Education. He married Clarice Harstad on September 1, 1951 in Minneapolis, Minnesota and together they began the Gun Lake Potato Farm. Russell???s study of soils at the U of M led his to Aitkin County???s peat land. In 1949 he bought 160 acres of undeveloped peat land and along with Clarice, by 1956, had established a core of developed potato fields that continues to this day. Russell???s dedication to land conservation and agriculture led him to both educate and lead the community. In 1974 Russell was elected Soil and Water Supervisor of the Second District, taking over from his uncle Albert Ruud, and held that position for 35 years until his death on October 22. He also served as president of the Minnesota Association of Resource Conservation Districts (RC&D) and the Aitkin County Soil and Water Conservation District. He was active with the Minnesota Farmers Union, Onanegozie RC&D Council, the Aitkin County Water Planning Task Force, and Bethel Lutheran Church. He taught High School Agriculture at Maple Lake, Mn., Hoffman, Mn., Pacoima Sr. High School in Los Angeles, Calf., and Milaca High School. He also taught the Veterans Cooperative Farm Management course from 1973 to 1980 at Aitkin, MN. He is survived by his wife of 58 years Clarice of Palisade; 2 sons: Aaron (Phyllis) of Soroti, Uganda; Paul (Judith) of Springfield, VA., five grandchildren: Rebecca (Nic); Melissa, Russell, Willow, Margaret, one great grandchild: Nicodemus. He was preceded in death by his parents William and Helen Ruud and one brother Warren Ruud. A memorial service will be held Saturday, October 31, 2009 at 1:00 PM from Bethel Lutheran Church in Palisade with Rev. William sass officiating. Visitation will be from Noon until the 1 PM services at the church. Military honors will be provided by the Aitkin VFW and American Legion Posts. Robert F. Farrell

Robert F. Farrell, age 79 of Aitkin died Tuesday, October 20, 2009 at the Riverwood Health Care Center in Aitkin. Robert was born February 13, 1930 at Bejou, Minnesota the son of James and Frances Farrell. He grew up and attended school in Mahnomen graduating from the Mahnomen High School. He then served one year in the U.S. Air Force. He then attended college at Mayville, North Dakota and then Bemidji State University where he received a degree in Social Work. He then attended the University of St. Louis in St. Louis, Missouri and received his Masters degree in Mental Health. He returned to Mahnomen and worked in the Health and Human Services Department from 1959 to 1965. In 1965 he moved to Aitkin, Mn. and worked as a supervisor in the Health and Human Services office and eventually became the director. He retired in 1990 and has lived in Aitkin since. He enjoyed gardening especially growing orchids. He had a lifelong interest in Latin American Affairs. He was a supporter of the Christian Children???s Fund and the Mission Ensenanza. He was also a strong supporter of orphanages in Mexico and Venezuela. He is survived by 2 brothers: Paul Farrell and Patrick Farrell both of the Twin Cities. He was preceded in death by his parents and 5 siblings. In following Robert???s wishes, there will be no funeral services. Hazell S. Cox

Hazell S. Cox, age 98 of McGregor died Monday, October 19, 2009 at the Aicota Health Care Center in Aitkin. Hazell was born August 8, 1911 at Winona, Minnesota the daughter of Oscar and Clara (Summers) Schneller. She attended schools in Winona and when she moved with her family to the Tamarack area she attended the Balsam Township School. She helped on the family farm. She then moved to St. Paul and worked for her uncle for a time. She then moved to Milwaukee, Wisc. and worked at the Milwaukee Hospital as a nurse???s aid for a time. She then moved to Detroit, Michigan and worked for the Chrysler War Plant during WW II. She married Leonard E. Cox on December 25, 1943 in Detroit, Michigan. They moved to Forest Lake, Mn in 1946 and she worked at the Miller Hospital. In 1962 they moved to McGregor and lived there until 2004 when she and Leonard moved to Aitkin. After Leonard???s death in 2007 Hazell moved back to McGregor and has lived there since. She was a member of Grace Lutheran Church; sang with the Harmonettes, was a member of the McGregor Flower Club, AARP, and she enjoyed singing, playing her organ and sewing quilts. She is survived by 1 son and daughter in law: Richard and Karin Cox of McGregor; 4 grandchildren; 9 great grandchildren and 2 great great grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Leonard, 3 brothers: Oscar, Theodore, Arthur and 2 sisters: Marietta and Violet. Funeral services will be held Thursday, October 22, 2009 at 1:00 PM from Grace Lutheran Church near McGregor with Rev. Becky Wagner officiating. Visitation will be from 11 to the 1 PM services at the church Thursday. Burial will be in the Woodland Cemetery at Winona, Minnesota on Friday, October 23 at 1 PM. He graduated from Aitkin High School. He was a U.S. Air Force Veteran. He retired from working at Brainerd Public Schools and was a member of the 49rs Union. He was an avid hunter, fisherman, and Vikings football fan. Dee E. Blanchard, age 88 of Aitkin formerly of Deerwood and Minneapolis died Monday, October 12, 2009 at the Riverwood Health Care Center in Aitkin. Dee was born July 24, 1921 in Minneapolis, Minnesota the son of Charles and Ruth Blanchard. He grew up and attended schools in Minneapolis. He married Jeannette L. McLean in November of 1941. He worked in Minneapolis for a time and then was inducted into the US Army in 1944 and served during WW II spending time in the Asiatic-Pacific Theater. He returned to Minneapolis upon his discharge and worked for the Honeywell Corporation. He moved to the Deerwood area in 1989 and lived there for a number of years before moving to Crosby. He has resided at the Aitkin Health Services in Aitkin for the past five years. He enjoyed playing the harmonica, fishing, camping and the outdoors. He also enjoyed drawing. He is survived by sons and daughters in law: Dennis and Mary of Two Rivers, Wisconsin; Lance and Corinne of Dayton, Mn.; Byron and Laurie of Anoka, Mn.; daughter and son in law: Bonnie and Jim of Deerwood; 15 grandchildren; 11 great grandchildren; 1 sister: LaVeral McLean of Minneapolis. Cyril B. Lemire, 88 of Aitkin died October 11, 2009 at Aitkin Health Services after an eight year struggle from a debilitating stroke. He was born May 19, 1921 south of Aitkin to Jeremiah and Anna (Paquette) Lemire. On April 11, 1943 Cyril was united in marriage to Esther Villeneuve in California. He was a U.S. Army veteran serving in World War II, in the European Theatre under General Patton. After returning from the war they moved to Minneapolis for work and to raise their family. He returned to Aitkin after retirement . He was truly a hard worker and provider for all. He enjoyed producing maple syrup, cutting wood, cribbage, hunting, fishing, family gatherings, dancing, socializing, and pie. He was a member of the American Legion, VFW, Golden Age Club, and St. James Catholic Church. Clyde R. Lesh, 91 of Aitkin died Monday, October 5, 2009 at Aicota Health Care Center in Aitkin. He was born November 16, 1917 in Aberdeen, South Dakota to Charles and Elenore (Rehfeld) Lesh, Jr. He graduated from high school in Minneapolis and then joined the U.S. Navy Reserve. He was a veteran of World War II serving with the Submarine Corps. Clyde was united in marriage to Dorris M. (Parmenter) on October 20, 1945 in Minneapolis. They lived on Horseshoe Lake and operated the Sub Club in Bennettville from 1947 to 1961. He then started a tree farm He was a lifetime member of the American Legion and VFW. Clyde is survived by his nephew Dean Eggena and Cindy Holden of Crosslake Nieces: Nona (Marvin) Smith of Annandale Diane (John) Bruns of Maple Lake He was preceded in death by his wife Dorris and his parents. Ronald Joseph Shereck

Ronald Joseph Shereck, age 76 of Glen died Thursday, October 1, 2009 at the Riverwood Health Care Center in Aitkin, after a long courageous battle with cancer. Ronald was born July 15, 1933 at Lankin, North Dakota the son of Gilbert and Adeline (Dritina) Shereck. He worked in the iron ore mines until he joined the Army at the age of 21 and served during the Korean War. He married Marie Maki on December 8, 1956 in Hibbing, Minnesota. They had five children. They purchased the Glen Store in 1983 and operated it until 1996. After retirement he served on the Glen Township Board for 7 ?? years. He enjoyed plowing snow, snowmobiling, deer hunting, fishing, reading and woodworking. He is survived by his wife Marie Shereck of Glen; Children and spouses: Doreen and John Polzin of Mora, Mn.; Mark and Vicki Shereck of Virginia, Mn.; Linda and Brad Swanson of Cambridge, Mn.; Kevin and Jen Shereck of Aitkin; Tim and Sarah Shereck of Aitkin; Grandchildren: Trisha (Brent) Curtis; Nicole (Tim) Kram; Tyler Swanson; Ashley Shereck; Karly Shereck; Haley Shereck; five step grandchildren; three great grandchildren; brothers: John (Margaret) Shereck of Bagley, Mn.; Dennis Shereck of Bagley, MN.; Vern (Barb) Shereck of Blaine, Mn and numerous nieces and nephews and other family members. Louise I. Eng, age 95 of Aitkin died Tuesday, September 22, 2009 at the Riverwood Health Care Center in Aitkin. Louise was born September 24, 1913 near Palisade, Minnesota the daughter of Axel and Britta (Ohlson) Eng. She grew up and attended country schools in Fleming Township and later attended school in Aitkin. At an early age she moved to Minneapolis and worked as a nanny. She later worked for the University of Minnesota as head pastry chef at Sanford Hall retiring in 1979 at which time she moved back to Fleming Township and lived with her sister Ellen. They enjoyed gardening, traveling, having coffee for the neighbors, and was a faithful member of the Christian Women???s Group. Since 1997 she spent every day visiting her sister Ellen at Aicota Health Care Center until her death in February of 2009. Louise is survived by one nephew: Clayton (Sherri) Peterson of Erhard, Minnesota; one niece: LuRae Melaas (Mike Stras) of Underwood, Minnesota; great nieces: Rebecca (Brian) Beckius of Buffalo, Minnesota; Sarah (Chris) Syverson of Fargo, North Dakota; great nephew: Tim Peterson (Brittany Zahler) of St. Cloud, Minnesota; great great niece: Ellen Louise Beckius; great great nephews: Victor John Beckius and Jackson Carl Peterson. She was preceded in death by her parents, one brother Oscar Eng, two sisters: Edith Peterson and Ellen Eng and brother in law: Luverne Peterson. Funeral services will be held Saturday, September 26, 2009 at 1 PM from the Fleming United Methodist Church with Rev. Russ Christensen and Rev. Judith Clark officiating. Clifford R. Johnson, 101 of Aitkin died Monday, September 21, 2009 at Aicota Health Care Center in Aitkin. He was born July 4, 1908 in South St. Paul to John and Ida (Swanson) Johnson. He started school in South St. Paul, then moved to Bain before moving back and attending high School in South St. Paul. Clifford was united in marriage to Grace Bronner on September 21, 1935 in Hill City. He worked in the stockyards in South St. Paul, as a farmer, and logging. He enjoyed trapping, hunting, fishing, dancing, picking berries, ricing, gardening, crossword puzzles, and making things out of wood. He was a member of Bethesda Lutheran Church of Rossburg. Clifford is survived by his wife Grace 4 daughters and sons-in-law: Christine (Bryan) Bailey of Aitkin Marlene Kingsley & (Warren Witt) of Palisade Muriel (Frank) Kingsley of Palisade Shirley (John) Johnson of Reedsport, OR. Joyce M. Gustin, age 72 of Aitkin died Wednesday, September 16, 2009 at the St. Cloud Hospital. Joyce was born March 12, 1937 in Aitkin, Minnesota the daughter of Ole and Marjorie (Woodcock) Anderson. She grew up attending schools in Palisade and Aitkin. She married Joseph Reich on August 29, 1953 in Palisade, MN. They lived in various communities in northern Minnesota prior to Joseph???s death in October of 1966. Joyce married Stanley Gustin on October 16, 1968 in Aitkin and they lived in the Dam Lake area where they operated the Dam Lake Store for a number of years and also operated Lone Spruce Turkey Farm until retiring in 2000. Joyce was a member of the Bethesda Lutheran Church at Rossburg and served as its church organist for over 25 years. She also served on the HUD Board and Glen Township Board for many years currently serving as its chair. She enjoyed painting, cooking, knitting, crocheting, mowing the lawn and birds. She also golfed for many years. She is survived by her husband Stan Gustin of Aitkin; children and spouses: Joseph Reich of Grand Rapids, Mn.; Cathy and Brian Anderson of Milwaukee, Wisconsin; Kristine and David Wagner of Hibbing; T.J. and Tiffany Gustin of Aitkin; Scott and Joy Gustin of St. Cloud; Daughter in law: Kathy Davis of Aitkin; 21 grandchildren; 6 great grandchildren; 1 brother and sister in law: Hollis and Anita Anderson of Aberdeen, South Dakota; sister: Elaine Stegmaier of Agra, Kansas. Clarence ''Pat'' Patrick Clarence W. Patrick, age 99 of Aitkin formerly of the Tamarack area died Wednesday, September 16, 2009 at the Aitkin Health Services in Aitkin, Mn. Clarence was born December 31, 1909 at Hazel, South Dakota the son of Sanford and Ann (Kallstrom) Patrick. He moved with his family to the Tamarack area in 1920 and attended the Tamarack school until 1929 at which time he moved to Flint, Michigan. While in Flint he was employed by the General Motors Company for 17 years and attended trade school for tool making. In 1943 he was drafted into the U.S. navy and was stationed at various bases along the east coast. In 1945 he met Lillian Briere of Lowell, Massachusetts and was married on February 16, 1946 in Aitkin, Mn. They lived in Aitkin and purchased Pat???s Diner which they operated until 1971 when he retired. C.W. was also a gunsmith in the area since 1946. He was a member of St. James Catholic Church in Aitkin. He is survived by nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Lillian in 1997, three brothers Leslie, Edward, and Donald and 1 sister: Mabel Johnson. John William Palthe, age 83 of Aitkin died Saturday, September 12, 2009 at the Centra Care Hospital in St. Cloud, Minnesota. John was born April 14, 1926 in St. Paul, Minnesota the son of Dutch immigrants John and Lena (Gerding) Palthe. He grew up in Little Canada, Minnesota. John enlisted in the U.S. Navy on his 18th birthday and served two years of active duty during WW II. Upon his discharge john was employed as a machinist at the American Can Company and then as a tool designer for Sperry Univac. John married Elaine Fristrom on October 21, 1967 in Minneapolis, Mn. They started their married life together in Roseville, Minnesota and were blessed with three daughters. John took early retirement from Sperry Univac and moved his family to Aitkin in 1983 to live his dream of building his family???s home and enjoying the splendors of the great outdoors. Through the years john was an active inventor, thinker, craftsman, reader, gardener, fisherman and conservationist. With his love of nature and passion for the environment, John???s kind and gentle spirit left a mark on all he met. John is survived by his loving wife Elaine ???sweets??? of 42 years, and three children and spouses: Kari and Eric Palthe Anderson; Kirsten and John Schoeller; Kaisha and John Rafferty. John also has seven grandchildren: Jack, Carson and Jayden Schoeller, Evan and Joshua Anderson; Avery and John Rafferty and also one sister: Gertrude Braun. He was preceded in death by his parents; Lena and John; a sister Ann and niece Linda Miller. She was also blessed with a heart of gold that could not turn away any of God???s creatures two legged or four. Most recently Margie had resided at Blackrock Terrace and then at the Golden Horizons where she had met some wonderful people. Bernice was born December 12, 1937 in Wisconsin the daughter of Alfred and Gladys (Weizski) Kitchenmaster. She attended schools in Wisconsin. She then worked as a child care provider for a time. She married Eugene J. Pojanowski on July 10, 1954 at Circle Pines, Minnesota. They lived at Marine on the St. Croix for a short time and then moved to Scandia, Mn. where the owned and operated a gas station and restaurant. They sold that and moved to Circle Pines and lived there until 1964 when they purchased a farm near Isle, Mn. They moved to the farm and worked the farm for 36 years until 2000 when they sold the farm and retired to the Palisade area. She enjoyed cooking, gardening, crocheting, birds, bowling, bingo and especially her family, neighbors and friends. Hazel was born November 6, 1914 at Swatara, Minnesota the daughter of Frank and Effie (Davis) Trepanier. She attended schools in the area and graduated from the Aitkin High School in 1932. She married John Truman Biskey on September 8, 1934 at Hill City. The lived and farmed in the Swatara area. She had served as president of the PTA for a number of years, was a member of St. James Catholic Church at Swatara and then St. Johns Catholic Church in Hill City. She had served as secretary and treasurer of the CCW in Swatara for many years. For 26 years she served as the secretary-treasurer for the Macville Cemetery. She also helped as caretaker of the cemetery along with her husband Truman. She was a member of the Moose Willow Sportsman???s Club and she was always active in the church and community activities. She enjoyed baking, sewing and canning. She is survived by 2 daughters and sons in law: Darlene and Ed Landrus of Coon Rapids, Mn.; Beverly and Tom Smith of Hill City, Mn.; daughter in law: Dorothy Biskey of Swatara; 17 grandchildren; 40 great grandchildren and 6 great great grandchildren and many friends. Eugene Leo Paulsen, age 75 of Rochester, Mn. formerly of Aitkin passed away Friday, August 14, 209 at St. Mary???s Hospital in Rochester. Gene was born November 12, 1933 in Aitkin the son of Paul and Kate Paulsen. He grew up and attended schools in Aitkin graduating from the Aitkin High School. He then served in the U.S. Army. He then attended graduated from the University of Minnesota at Duluth. He worked tirelessly for 40 years as the Co-Owner of Gravelle Plumbing and Heating Company in Aitkin as a master plumber. Gene was a member of the Korean War Vets Club and the American Legion in Rochester, MN. He is survived by his wife Laraine of Rochester; daughter and son in law: Kari and Dusty Cartie of Aitkin; Stepsons: Eugene and Janice Watson of Ellicot City, Maryland; Paul Watson of Farmington, Mn.; Dennis and Tracy Watson of Farmington, Mn; seven grandchildren; 1 sister and brother in law: Eileen and George Deering of McGregor; 1 brother in law: Albert Christensen of Aitkin. He was preceded in death by his Parents, first wife Muriel; sister: Marian Christensen, and Brother James. A celebration of Life Mass will be held Thursday, August 20, 2009 at 7 PM from St. James Catholic Church in Aitkin with Fr., Justin Fish officiating. Visitation will be 1 hour prior to the service at the church. A private interment will be at the St. Thomas Cemetery in Aitkin. Blanche L. Elf, age 92 of McGregor died Wednesday, August 12, 2009 at the Riverwood Health Care Center in Aitkin. Blanche was born July 8, 1917 at McGregor, Minnesota the daughter of Orrin and Alma (Nordell) Williamson. She grew up and attended schools in the McGregor area and graduated from the McGregor High School. She then attended two years of college in Minneapolis. While attended college she worked as a nanny for a family in Minneapolis. She married Knute H. Elf on August 8, 1942 at Braham, Minnesota. They lived in the Twin Cities. She went to work at Honeywell as a secretary in 1959 and worked there until 1974 at which time she and her husband retired to the McGregor area. She has lived here since. She was a very active member of the McGregor Friends of the Library and the McGregor United Methodist Church. She enjoyed gardening, sewing, knitting, crocheting and scrap booking. She loved to read and play scrabble. She is survived by son: Roger Elf of McGregor; daughter and son in law: Sandra and Don Wamsley of Walden, Colorado; 5 grandchildren: Tammy Maginnis, Bob Wamsley, Brandy Elf, Christina Elf, Marin Wamsley; 2 great grandchildren: Liam Maginnis, Daenen Jones; and 1 sister: Helen Sobiech of Mission, Texas. She was preceded in death by her parents, husband Knute in 1989, 2 brothers and 2 sisters. Funeral services will be held Monday, August 17, 2009 at 1:00 PM from the McGregor United Methodist Church with Rev. Russell Christensen officiating. Betty Lou Dahl-Schumann, age 54 of Aitkin formerly of International Falls, Eagan and Andover, died Tuesday, August 11, 2009 at the Falls Memorial Hospital in International Falls, Minnesota. She was born September 24, 1954 in International Falls, Mn. the daughter of Robert and Laurel (Stumbo) Dahl. She grew up and attended schools in International Falls graduating from the High School there. She attended the Bemidji State University from 1988 to 1992 and received a degree in Theater Arts. She then moved to Eagan, Mn. She married Matthew K. Schumann on September 10, 1994 at Andover, Mn. She lived in Andover from 1994 to 1999 at which time they moved to Aitkin and they have lived here since. She worked in Aitkin doing Adult Foster Care and she also had worked as an artist. She enjoyed painting, landscaping and working in flowers gardens. She enjoyed any outdoor activity. She is survived by her husband Matt Schumann of Aitkin; 2 daughters and spouses: Katie and Jeff Lehrke of St. Paul, Mn.; Kathie and Ed Karsnia of Anoka, MN.; 2 grandchildren: Joey Hower and Sami Kate Karsnia; Mother: Laurel Dahl of International Falls, Mn.; 2 sisters: Jennifer Christiansen of Eagan, Mn.; Julie Chabot of Ft. Rita Y.(Iaquinto) Stifter, age 71 of Aitkin formerly of McGregor and Minneapolis, died Sunday, August 9, 2009 at the Cuyuna Regional Care Center in Crosby. Rita was born December 31, 1937 in Minneapolis, Minnesota the daughter of John and Margaret (Nelson) Iaquinto. She grew up and attended schools in Minneapolis attended Patrick Henry High School and then the Minneapolis Vocational School. She married Willard John Stifter on February 19, 1955 in Minneapolis. They lived in Minneapolis for 13 years and then moved to Aitkin in 1969. She worked at various restaurants and supper clubs in the Aitkin and McGregor area. They moved to McGregor and lived there for a time before moving back to Aitkin in 1992. She was an avid quilter and needle pointer. She is survived by her husband Willard Stifter of Aitkin; Children and spouses: Wendy Carlstrom of Blaine, Mn.; Delores and Alvin Wiita of Anchorage, Alaska; John and Korrine Stifter of Watertown, Mn.; 14 grandchildren, 6 great grandchildren, 2 brothers: Ray Iaquinto of Isle, Mn.; Robert Iaquinto of Minneapolis, Mn. In 1990 Deborah was united in marriage to Bob Larkowski in Long Lake. She enjoyed flowers, bird watching, and loved her cats. Vivian A. Colstad age 95 of McGrath formerly of the Twin Cities died Saturday, August 8, 2009 at her home in McGrath, Mn. Vivian was born December 26, 1913 at Becker, Minnesota the daughter of Jacob and Jennie (Moore) Clitty. She grew up and attended schools in Backer. She then attended Beauty School and opened her own salon in Minneapolis. She married Ronald L. Colstad in 1936 in Minneapolis. They lived in Minneapolis until 1961 when they moved to Florida. They returned to Minneapolis in 1964 and lived in the area until 1987. Her husband died in 1987 and she moved back to Florida and lived there until 2003 when she moved back to St. Anthony Village. She moved to McGrath, Mn. in 2005 and had lived there since. She had worked for the city of Minneapolis in Law Enforcement as a detective. She also owned a number of consulting businesses and worked as a safety consultant for many businesses. She had served as a director for the Crippled Child Relief Organization and she enjoyed fishing. She is survived by 2 sons and daughters in law: James and Catherine Colstad of McGrath, Mn.; Lee and Joanne Colstad of Lakeland, Florida; 7 grandchildren; 14 great grandchildren; 2 great great grandchildren; 2 sisters: Phyllis Huskey of Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania; Grace Johnson of Becker, Mn. Terrance L. Overstad, age 58 of Aitkin formerly of Mora and Redfield, South Dakota died Monday, August 3, 2009 at the Riverwood Health Care Center in Aitkin, Mn. Terrance was born October 6, 1950 at Starbuck, Minnesota the son of Homer and Mary (Tobin) Overstad. He moved at an early age with his family to Blaine, Minnesota where he grew up and attended schools. He married Mardene Ragels on May 3, 1974 at Gettysburg, South Dakota. They made their home in Mora, Mn where he owned and operated his own meat cutting business. He also lived in Redfield, South Dakota for a time before moving to Aitkin in 1987 where he worked as a meat cutter and meat department manager for the Thriftway Grocery Store. He then moved to Wyoming and had just recently returned to Aitkin. He was an artist and enjoyed painting. He was an excellent cook and loved motorcycling and having coffee at the local coffee shops each day. He is survived by 3 daughters and sons in law: Cindi and Greg Hills of Aitkin; Terra and Bruce Wilcox of Aitkin; Brandee and Kevin Siebrecht of Redfield, South Dakota; 8 grandchildren: Kaylin, Brandon, Cole, Hunter, Isabel, Tanner, Lexi and Madyson; and 3 brothers??? Jerry Overstad of Stillwater, Mn.; Ronnie Overstad of Pine City, Mn.; Donnie Overstad of Mora, Mn. He was preceded in death by his parents Homer and Mary Overstad and 2 brothers: Richard and William Overstad. Jason was born January 28, 1973 in Minneapolis, Minnesota, the son of John and Dorothy Skinaway Antel. He grew up and attended schools in Minneapolis. He then worked construction for many years. He moved to the McGregor area in 2000 and has lived here since. He was a member of the Mille Lacs Band of Ojibwe. He is survived by 2 daughters: Briana (Lala) Friend of McGregor; Kelly Friend of Onamia; son: Jason Friend of McGregor; Fianc??: Tara Kangas of McGregor; Brothers: Troy Dean Friend, Thomas Chadwick Friend, Marlin Stanley, Scott Friend, Sean Friend, Brandon Lee Stanley and sister Jessica Friend all of Minneapolis. Richard W. Gruhlke, age 92 of Palisade died Monday, July 27, 2009 at the Aicota Health Care Center in Aitkin. Richard was born June 6, 1917 at Chatfield, Minnesota the son of William and Christine (Stickford) Gruhlke. He attended schools in Dover, Minnesota. He moved with his family to the Kimberly-Rossburg area at the age of 16. He worked for Ziske???s Resort for a time and then worked for the Hoffman Turkey Farm for five years. He married Ruby E. Johnson on June 27, 1940 at Kimberly. In 1943 they purchased a farm in the Palisade area and raised turkeys and dairy farmed until 1979 when he retired. Richard also drove School Bus for the Aitkin School District from 1965 to 1987 when he turned 70. His wife Ruby died in 1994. He married Naomi Siers on May 25, 1996 at the Pine Lake Chapel near Aitkin. He was a member of the Palisade United Methodist Church and had served on the church board, the Palisade Coop Creamery and Palisade Coop Oil, had served on the Waukenabo Township Board for many years and had served as a board member of the FHA. He enjoyed watching the Twins and Vikings, driving his tractor and also sightseeing. He loved his family very much and thoroughly enjoyed the family gatherings. Toini M. Berglund, age 93 of Aitkin died Monday, July 27, 2009 at the Aicota Health Care Center in Aitkin. Toini was born January 29, 1916 at Aitkin, Minnesota the daughter of Jacob and Sandra Nikko. She grew up and attended schools in Aitkin graduating from the Aitkin High School. She then worked in Duluth for a time before coming back to Aitkin where she married Sidney O. Berglund on September 26, 1941. While Sidney served in the U.S. Army during WW II, Toini lived and worked in Albuquerque, New Mexico. Upon Sidney???s discharge they returned to Minnesota and lived in St., Cloud for a time and then returned to Aitkin where they operated a farm for many decades. Toini had worked as a waitress over the years; she also worked at Butlers and the Aitkin Coffee Shop. She had also worked for the Aitkin IGA Store and Paulbeck???s Grocery Store. She moved to Maryhill Manor in the mid 1990???s. She was a member of First Lutheran Church in Aitkin and had served as a Sunday school teacher and was a member of the Ladies Aid Groups. She was also a 4H leader for the Twin Oaks Group. She had a passion for knitting, crocheting and embroidering. Toini also enjoyed gardening. She is survived by son and daughter in law: Sidney and Cathy Berglund of Round Rock, Texas; daughter and son in law: Sandy and Paul Groneberg of Hoffman, Mn.; 5 grandchildren: John (Michelle) Berglund of Montrose, MN.; Becky Berglund of Rochester, Mn.; Nathan (Rita) Groneberg of Hugo, Mn.; Michael (Jaclyn) Groneberg of Minneapolis, Mn.; Amy Groneberg of Bloomington, Mn.; 2 great grandchildren: Ellia Groneberg and Owen Groneberg and several nieces and nephews. He was a U.S. Army Veteran serving in WW II. He fought in seven major Pacific Theater Battles. On February 27, 1950 in Aitkin Henry was united in marriage to Alice Way. In the past he worked in the evening at Fred???s Cafe as a janitor to help support his family. He was employed at Lampert Lumber in Crosby for 43 years and then for Lakes States Lumber in Aitkin. He was a member of the Aitkin American Legion Lee Post #86, Aitkin VFW Roberts-Glad Post #1727, and St. John???s Lutheran Church in Aitkin. Bea??? Jacobsen, 91 of Aitkin died Monday, July 20, 2009 at Aicota Health Care Center in Aitkin. She was born July 13, 1918 in Shakopee to John and Laura (Unze) Clemens. On October 28, 1939 in Minneapolis Bea was united in marriage to Theodore Jacobsen. She worked for Honeywell for 21 years. They moved from Minneapolis to rural Aitkin in 1972. She started volunteering with the Riverwood Healthcare Auxiliary in 1974 and recently reached 3,000 hours of volunteer service. She watched the auxiliary grow from a dozen members to over 100 and served on many committees and as president twice. Riverwood CEO Mike Hagen said ???Bea Exemplifies the meaning of volunteerism.??? She was also an active member of St. James Catholic Church, Riverboat Lions Club, and the Red Cross Bloodmobile. James was born January 29, 1950 at St. Paul, Minnesota the son of William H. and Clara M. (Kalischko) Franklin. He grew up and attended schools in St. Paul graduating from Humboldt High School. He married Barbara Jean Kern on September 28, 1968 in St. Paul. They lived in Inver Grove Heights where they raised their family and he worked for West Publishing, Menard???s and the Wilder Foundation. He also worked as a heavy equipment operator for a number of years. He had been coming to the Waukenabo Lake area since the mid 1980???s and he and his wife moved here in 2000. He has lived here since. He was a member of the Minnesota Federation of Square Dancers and the Palisade First Responders. He enjoyed hunting and fishing. He is survived by his wife Barbara Franklin of Palisade; son and daughter in law: James Jr. and Susanne Franklin of Inver Grove Heights, Mn.; daughter and son in law: Carrie and Mitchell Dudrey of South St. Paul, Mn.; grandson: Jon Donaldson of South St. Paul, Mn.; mother in law: Deloris Kern of St. Paul, Mn.; sisters in law and brothers in law: Judith and Augie Kiekhoefer of Oakdale, Mn.; Richard and Joanne Kern of North St. Paul, MN.; Kathleen Kern of St. Paul, Mn.; sisters: Judith Roy of North Branch, Mn.; Barbara and Richard Cummings of Newport, Mn.; Brother: Michael and Sylvia Franklin of Germany; sister in law: Anne Franklin of Grand Rapids, Mn. and many nieces and nephews. He was preceded in death by his parents, brother: William T. Franklin, infant sister Susan Franklin, father in law Gerald Kern and brother in law Rob Roy. Funeral services will be held Saturday, July 18, 2009 at 12:00 Noon from the House Of Prayer Lutheran Church in Oakdale, Mn. with Rev. Phil Walen officiating. Elinor F. Zilverberg, 87 of Aitkin died Tuesday, July 14, 2009 at Riverwood Health Care Center in Aitkin. She was born April 14, 1922 in Dean Lake Township, Crow Wing County to Franklin and Myrtle (Ronshausen) Keim. As a youth she was a member of 4-H. She graduated from Aitkin High School class of 1940. On June 1, 1945 in Aitkin, Elinor was united in marriage to Dave Zilverberg. She was a homemaker, wife and mother. She enjoyed sewing, gardening, and cooking. Elinor is survived by two daughters and son-in-law: Eileen (Dick) Weijanen of Aitkin Kathleen Zilverberg of Aitkin 2 sons and daughters-in-law: Richard (Peg) Zilverberg of Colorado Springs, CO. Franklin (Sue) Zilverberg of Colorado Springs, CO. Seven grandchildren, 6 great-grandchildren. She was preceded in death by her husband Dave in 2001, infant daughter Yvonne, son-in-law Larry ???Ditter??? Geving, Jr., and her parents Franklin and Myrtle Keim. Arthur L ''Sparky'' Doelz Arthur L. ???Sparky??? Doelz, age 78 of McGregor, formerly of Mounds View died Tuesday, July 14, 2009 at the Riverwood Health Care Center in Aitkin. Sparky was born March 14, 1931 in Minneapolis, Minnesota the son of Walter E. and Helen Ann (Hodgson) Doelz. He grew up and attended schools in Minneapolis graduating from Marshall High School. He worked as a truck driver in the trucking industry for about 30 years. He lived and raised his family in Mounds View. Upon his retirement in the mid 1980???s, he moved to McGregor and has lived here since. He was a member of the Eagles Club in Kingman, Arizona; was a Shriner, and had served as a Civil Defense Warden. He had been as Ham Radio Buff. He is survived by special friend: Carol Gilgenbach of McGregor; sons: Michael Doelz of San Francisco, Calf.; Patrick Doelz and Fianc?? Tara Staskivige of Cohasset, Mn.; daughter: Luanne Curtis of Forest Lake, Mn.; 4 grandchildren: Justin, Anthony, Hannah and Jack, and 3 great grandchildren: Camden, Jackson and Bennett, and 1 brother and sister in law: Walter E. and Diane Doelz of Bloomington, Mn. Mavis K. McGuire, 68 of Aitkin died Saturday, July 11, 2009 at Riverwood Health Care Center in Aitkin. She was born November 21, 1940 in Stillwater to Walter and Donelda (Rubow) LaRoche. She graduated from Mahtomedi High School in 1958 and then the University of Minnesota with a B.S. degree in Home Economics. On September 28, 1963 Mavis was united in marriage to Donald ???Mike??? McGuire at St. Andrews Church in Mahtomedi. They owned and operated Whitewood Resort on Spirit Lake since 1971. She was employed as Aitkin County???s first Home Extension Agent. She drove bus for Aitkin Schools for 25 years, she owned Whitewood Square Dance Boutique, she was President of the Cuyuna Rock, Gem, & Mineral Club, a member of the Riverboat Reelers, she was board chair for Aitkin County H.R.A., an active member of First Lutheran Church, she designed costumes for Aitkin High School musicals and plays, and was a 4-H judge for county fairs. She enjoyed sewing, collecting nut crackers, and square dancing. Mavis is survived by her son and daughter-in-law: Todd (Charmayne) of Pulaski, WI. Daughter and son-in-law: Wanda McGuire and Rob Doenges of Hanover, IN. 3 Grandsons: Brady, Michael, and Alexander Three sisters: Darlene Colonna of Framingham, MA. Betty (Laverne) Forrest of Fitchburg, WI. Marcella (Jack) Isenhart of Omaha, NE. 2 brothers: Walter LaRoche of Forest Lake Lester (Robin) LaRoche of Mahtomedi Uncle Orville and Aunt Pauline Rubow of Deerwood And many other close relatives and friends. Joan M. Lueck, age 79 of Aitkin died Thursday, July 9, 2009 at the Aicota Health Care Center in Aitkin. She was born July 7, 1930 in Minneapolis, Minnesota the daughter of Robert and Madelyn (Westling) Lindberg. She grew up and attended schools at Wayzata, Minnesota. She married Marvin Frost. She worked as a dental assistant and also worked as an occasional model for several Wayzata women???s clothing stores. She also worked at Sherwood Forest near Garrison. She was an Aitkin County Senior Volunteer, was a member of St. Johns Lutheran Church at Cedarbrook, and enjoyed hooking rugs, reading, sewing and golfing. She had served as president of the Wayzata Women???s Club and vice president of the Wayzata Women???s Auxiliary. She married Conrad A. Lueck on April 6, 1986 at St. Johns Lutheran Church at Cedarbrook. Joan is survived by her husband Conrad Lueck of Aitkin; 3 sons and daughters in law: Judd and Debra Frost of Wayzata, Mn.; John and Janelle Frost of Rancho Santa Fe, California; Mark Lueck of Aitkin; daughter in law: Middie Frost-Ringer of Medina, Mn.; 1 brother: Richard P. Lindberg of New Hope, Mn.; Grandchildren: Madeline Frost, Judson Frost, Marcus Frost, Jessica Frost, step grandchildren: Kati Field, Thomas Field, step great grandchild: Christian Field. George ''Buddy'' Roderick George ''Buddy'' E. Roderick, 77, passed away Monday, June 29, 2009 at the Aicota Health Care Center in Aitkin. He had been suffering from Alzheimer???s for 11 years. He was born November 3, 1931 in International Falls to parents Sherman and Mildred (Nelson) Roderick. He went to school in International Falls and then worked at Ontario Mando Paper Mill until he joined the Air Force in 1951. He served in Korea as a cook and received the Korean Service Medal, United Nations Service Medal and National Defense Service Medal. He was discharged in 1955 and returned to International Falls and continued to work at the mill. He then married and moved to Virginia, Mn where he worked for Bethlehem Steel Co. From there he moved to Leadville, Colorado and worked in the mine. He then moved to Everett, WA. and worked for Nord Door Co., returning from there in 1967 to Minneapolis where he went to work for Superior Plating. From there he worked as a pressman for B.F. Nelson Folding Carton Company until he retired in 1993 and moved to McGregor, Mn. He was a lifetime Member of the VFW in International Falls. He belonged to Gopher 2 Pup tent of the Cooties. He was a member of Round Lake Presbyterian church where he served as a session member. He loved music, hunting, fishing, gardening, taking movies, children and the Vikings. He is survived by his wife, Kathryne. Daughters: Roxanne (David) Aitkin, Loretta Hallquist, Kathleen (James) Hennessey, Teresa Christie. Grandchildren: Alexander (Melinda) Aitkin, Amanda (Charles) Ennen, Amber (Daniel) Mevissen, Anthony Hallquist, Jeremy (Cathy) Gillis, Justin (Stephanie) Vick, Toni (Gene) Borrell, Angie (Gary) Vetsch, Angela (Dana) Tompkins, and Erica Christie. Great-Grandchildren: Tony, Aacoda, Alexander, Davian, Nicholas, Elayna, Matthew, Josephine, Cheyenne, Neveah, Alex, Nolan, Brittany, Colton, Rachel, Megan, Owen, Austin, William, Lacy, Morgan, Madison, McKenzie, Tyler, Baylie.
